Parks & Recreation Board Appoint New Chair and Vice-Chair and Go Over The 2025 Fee Schedule

The Crookston Parks & Recreation Board met on Tuesday, January 21, at 4:45 p.m. at City Hall in the Conference Room.

There were two items on Tuesday’s regular agenda. The first was to appoint a new Board Chair to replace Mike LaFrance who is now serving a term with the Crookston Planning Commission.

The board appointed Brigette Burzette-Deleon as the Parks & Rec Chair and Andrea Brekken as the Vice Chair.

The board then took some time to look over the Parks & Rec Fee Schedule for 2025.  Some of the changes that were made for 2025 included adding residential and non-residential fees for the pool and fee hikes for many rental and membership fees at the Crookston Sports Center. Rates were also increased for Campground Rentals and Park Shelter Rentals for 2025.  The board did identify an issue with the way things were worded as far as the Park Rental fees were concerned. “What happened is, when we do our Parks, we do like a day, but Park Board suggested we go by blocks,” says Park and Recreation Director Jake Solberg. “So, we set up like a two-hour block minimum, charge this much, and then every hour after that, you would charge $10 or something like that.” The board thinks making this change creates more structure for the rental program. The board agreed that Solberg would add the fee structure changes and return to the board for approval.

A few discussion items came up at Tuesday’s meeting.  First, Solberg informed the board that he had encountered some issues with the shooting room at the Crookston Sports Center.  He said kids have been writing on the walls.  The room is now locked and needs to be requested for use, and there have been cameras installed, which the Blue Line Club covered as they want to keep the shooting room open for use instead of closed due to abuse of the facility.

Lastly, the Parks & Rec board discussed changing their meeting time and date as the current dates could overlap with City Council Meetings in the future. “Being that council got moved to the first and third Monday of every month now, we are going to move our Park Board to the second Monday of every month,” says Solberg. “And then a start time of 4:30 p.m.” All board members were in agreement on the time and date changes, which makes the next Parks & Rec meeting on Monday, February 10, at 4:30 p.m.
