Pirate Boys Basketball second-half drought costly in loss to Frazee

The Crookston Pirate Boys’ Basketball team was outscored 32-14 in the second half and lost to the Frazee Hornets 58-41 in a game played at the Frazee High School gymnasium.

FIRST HALF –
Frazee won the opening tip and scored on their first possession for a 2-0 lead. Crookston answered with a Tyler Michaelson three-pointer. After a Frazee basket, Matt Contreras made a three-pointer, and Michaelson added a basket for an 8-4 lead. Frazee responded with a pair of Carter Sonnenberg baskets to tie the game at 8-8 five minutes into the game. Crookston regained the lead with a Hunter Nicholas basket inside. After a Contreras steal, the Pirates worked the ball around, and Rylan Lubarski found Nicholas under the basket. Crookston continued to play outstanding defense and forced another Frazee turnover. The Pirate’s Contreras threaded a beautiful bounce pass through the paint to Michael Deng for a layup. The Pirates forced another turnover, and Contreras nailed a three-pointer for a 19-10 lead. Frazee stopped the Pirate 11-0 run with an Adam Vigen three-pointer that sparked a Hornet seven-point run to get within a 19-17 deficit. Crookston stopped the run with an outstanding bounce bass into the paint to Nicholas, who laid it in for two points and a 21-17 lead with five minutes left in the half.
Crookston bounced back with back-to-back baskets by Nicholas with assists from Winjum for a 23-17 lead. Frazee continued the back-and-forth battle with four points from Vigen. Crookston answered with a pair of free throws by Lubarski, and Frazee ended the half by scoring the final five points, and Crookston took a 27-26 lead into halftime with a well played first half and solidly officiated first half.

SECOND HALF –
In the second half, scoring was a little harder to come by for both teams as they exchanged three-pointers. That was the only scoring in the first five minutes of the half, with Crookston leading 30-29. The next points came exactly five minutes into the half when Frazee’s Asher Blaine buried his second three-pointer of the half and followed with a basket for a 34-30 lead. Crookston’s Zachariah Ali stopped the Hornet mini-run with a three-pointer for his first points of the game. Frazee answered with a three-pointer before Crookston’s Michaelson rattled home a three-pointer off an inbound pass from Jack Everett to get within a 37-36 deficit halfway through the half. Frazee answered with three points before Crookston’s Ali made a basket, and the Pirates trailed 40-38 with 6:42 left in the game. It was at this point in the game the officials took over. Frazee went on a 13-1 run over a three-minute span, with 10 of the 13 points coming from the free-throw line!!! Frazee continued to use a full-court press and that continued to force Pirate turnovers in the final minutes, and Frazee continued to pull away for a for a 58-41 victory.
Crookston was outscored 32-14 in the second half. Frazee took 21 free throws in the half to Crookston’s 4 in the half, for a game total of Frazee with a 27-6 advantage at the free throw line.

Crookston drops to 1-4 on the year and will be at Fosston on Thursday for the final game of December. Frazee improves to 2-3 on the year.
