The Crookston Pirate Boys Hockey team scored at least three goals in every period and Ryan Street recorded a hat trick en route to a 10-2 blowout over the Mayville-Portland Ice Dawgs in the Pirates’ penultimate game of the season.
FIRST PERIOD –
Crookston put the pedal to the metal to start the first period. They opened up firing on offense, peppering the Ice Dawg goaltender Kaden Hogfoss. They were rewarded early, as Riley Benson went coast-to0coast, lost the puck, then regained it back door and put it away to put the Pirates up 1-0. This was followed in kind by Garrett Fischer, who put away a beautiful pass from Greyson Ecker to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead. A couple minutes after that. Tate Hamre fired a missile that was saved by Hogfoss, but Connor Hanson was right there to put the rebound away, giving the Pirates a 3-0 lead. It seemed as though it would stay that way, but a late penalty cost the Pirates as Jonathan Muhs put one away on the power play to make the score 3-1 at the end of the period. “We really dominated play in the first with 19 shots on goal,” said Pirate head coach Josh Hardy, “It was a really strong effort overall.”
SECOND PERIOD –
Mayville-Portland looked to ride the momentum they got after scoring late in the first period, and they were able to do so, as they put a puck past David Larson in net in the first two minutes of the period to cut the lead down to 3-2. Crookston needed to respond to this surge, and respond they did. As this game continued, the second line of Brandon Colborn, Ryan Street and Michael Bochow really came alive. Street ended the Ice Dawg run with a goal from down the middle to give the Pirates a 4-2 lead. 4 minutes later, Teagan Lubinski had a breakaway to put the Pirates up 5-2. In case that wasn’t enough, just 24 seconds later, Garrett Fischer got a breakaway and beat Hogfoss to make it 6-2 Pirates. The scoring slowed down until the final 15 seconds, when Street put away his second goal of the period to put the Pirates up 5 headed into the intermission. “The line of Bochow, Street and Colborn was really buzzing tonight,” said coach Josh Hardy, “They led the way for us offensively and it’s fun to see this group of seniors really step up for us at this time of year.”
THIRD PERIOD –
As the third period started, the pace of play slowed down and very few shots on goal came from either side. At 7:24, though, Crookston began adding on once more, as the second line continued their fantastic day as Michael Bochow scored to give the Pirates an 8-2 lead. Just a few minutes later, Ryan Street recorded a hat trick, scoring his third goal of the game to put the Pirates up 9-2. The night could’ve been complete then, but in the final 90 seconds of the game, Cody Demerais sniped one from the blue line for his 2nd varsity goal, and the Pirates scored their 10th goal of the game, their third time this year to accomplish this feat. Overall, coach Hardy was satisfied with the performance of his team “After struggling to find the back of the net on Friday, we were really able to do so today,” said Hardy, “Excited to wrap up the season tomorrow at home against Red Lake Falls in what is sure to be a great Section 8A game.”
