The Fertile-Beltrami Falcons used a late first-half run and another run to start the second half to beat the Crookston Pirate Girls ‘ Basketball team 65-38 at the Crookston High School gymnasium.
FIRST HALF
Fertile-Beltrami started the game strong as they took a 12-4 lead behind Madison Stueness’ nine points. Crookston settled down and answered with 10-2 run behind four Grace Boll points, three points from Halle Nicholas, two points from Brooklyn Waldal, and a free throw from Madi Bruggeman to tie the game at 14-14 with 8:28 left in the half.
Fertile-Beltrami responded with a 12-0 run behind four more points from Stueness, three points apiece from Indigo Oistad, and Mya Erickson, and a basket from Kenna Flakne for a 26-14 lead. The teams played even the rest of the way and Fertile-Beltrami led 32-20 going into halftime.
SECOND HALF
Fertile-Beltrami had a great start to the second half as they went on a 14-2 run behind eight points from Bailey Iverson, and two points from Erickson, Katrina Hitchen, and Oistad for a 46-22 lead six minutes into the half. Crookston’s Nicholas made a three-pointer to stop the run. After a Falcon basket, Crookston’s Bruggeman made a basket, but Fertile-Beltrami’s Macy Petry and Erickson scored two points apiece for a 52-27 lead with eight minutes left in the game. Crookston’s Bruggeman added another basket, and that started a back-and-forth battle the rest of the game. Both teams went to the benches for the rest of the game, and Fertile-Beltrami had 12 players score on their way to a 65-38 victory.
Crookston struggled from the free throw line only making seven of 18, while Fertile-Beltrami made 19 of 26.
Crookston drops to 3-8 on the year and will host Park Rapids on Monday. Fertile-Beltrami improves to 9-3 on the year.
