Fee Scores 100th career point and game-winner, and Burnette gets first varsity goal in win over Fort Frances

Crookston Pirate Girls Hockey senior captain Addie Fee scored late in the game to lift the Pirate to a 2-1 win over Fort Frances, Ontario, at the Ralph Engelstad Arena Thanksgiving Classic in Thief River Falls. It was Fee’s 100 career point, combined with the first goal ever on varsity for sophomore Shyuh Brunette and 28 save performance from Kamebelle Freije to secure the win.

First Period
After a slow start with Fort Frances getting out to a 3-1 shot advantage, the Pirates picked it up a bit and came close several times to get on the scoreboard, with defenseman Adley Vigness just missing in close, as did Addie Fee and Jocelyn Field. The Muskie’s senior goaltender, Danielle Schram, was standing tall, and it was a battle of the goalies for most of the period. Crookston did come up with the only goal of the period when Field sent a pass back to defenseman Kaylie Clauson, whose shot was tipped by sophomore Shyuh Burnette in front past Schram to give the winger the varsity goal of her career, and it was 1-0 Crookston. “It was exciting to see Shyuh score the first goal of her career,” said Crookston head coach Reed Olson, “I thought the third line had some great shifts, and it was nice to see them rewarded with the goal.”

Second Period
The second period belonged to Fort Frances, even though they drew their first two penalties. The Pirates could not capitalize on either man-advantage opportunity; Crookston only had six shots after having 11 in the first period! About halfway through the period, the Muskies struck with senior Marissa Kenny, who was parked to the left of Crookston goaltender; Kamebelle Freije. Kenny was able to slide a shot that appeared to hit Freije’s pad or skate and deflected in to tie the game at 1-1 , which is how the second period ended. “We didn’t have a very good second period overall,” said coach Olson, “we had too many possible chances, but didn’t do a very good job of passing the puck. But even though Kamebelle gave up the one goal, she was solid in that period and throughout the game. She is a stud.”

Third Period
Crookston started the period with an early penalty, but with Freije manning the goal and steering aside shots, the Pirates skated the penalty off. Fort Frances would take two penalties later part in the period, and Crookston had some chances. However, they weren’t moving the puck around, and the Muskies could to clear it without any damage. Crookston’s Fee would give the Pirates the lead again with five and a half minutes left with her first goal of the year and the 100th point of her career. “I was in the offensive zone when Jocelyn passed the puck to Hadley. Her shot was stopped and laying at the goal crease, and I just knocked it in,” said the senior. Linemate Haley Verwest is an eighth grader from Mayville. Fee took a cross-checking penalty with 1:03 to go in the game, but the Pirates killed it off to claim the 2-1 win. “I thought we picked up play in the third period,” said Coach Olson, “It was nice to see Addie score that score, both to give the lead and her 100th point. She had two great chances in the first period, including the shot off the crossbar. She provides us with leadership and work ethic and is very coachable.”
It was the first win of the season for Crookston and also the first head coaching win for the first-year coach Olson. “It’s nice to get that first win for sure,” said Olson, “we have to work on taking so many penalties in both our games. But our last game was November 12, and we’ve only had two games since our first day of practice on October 28th we were a little rusty again tonight, but now it feels like a regular season as we get going on a regular schedule.”

Crookston is 1-1 on the year and will play River Lakes (a combination of Albany, Avon, Belgrade, Brooten, Cold Spring, Eden Valley, Elrosa, New London, Paynesville, Richmond, Spicer, St. John’s Prep, and Watkins) on Saturday afternoon at the Ralph Engelstad Arena. Fort Frances is 3-2 on the season and will play Thief River Falls on Saturday afternoon at the Ralph Engelstad Arena.
