PIRATE GIRLS TENNIS FINISH FIFTH/BRUGGEMAN & GUNDERSON CHAMPS

The Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team finished 5th place at the Crookston Pirate Booster/Carla Johnson Memorial tournament held on a warm and windy day in Crookston at tennis courts throughout the town. Six points separated the top six teams and Perham won the tournament with 22 points, one point better than New London-Spicer.  “It was an even tournament up and down the board,” said Pirate Coach Cody Brekken. “It was tight until the end and a lot of good tennis.”

CHAMPIONS
Crookston had one champion with the third doubles team of Halle Bruggeman and Emma Gunderson (a freshman and eighth-grader) winning third doubles Bruggeman Gunderson won all three of their matches in straight sets with wins over teams from Hibbing, Perham, and Moorhead. “That was a good combo with two younger girls playing well together,” said Coach Brekken. “They came out and played well all day and dominated the championship match and kept the pressure on and that tells you a lot about their maturity. They had a great day.”

RUNNER-UP-
Halle Winjum (an eighth-grader) won the title at third singles. Halle Winjum dominated most of her sets on her way to victories over girls from Moorhead, Hibbing, and Perham. “Halle played well and ran into a very good opponent in the championship and couldn’t pull it off,” said Coach Brekken. “She was happy with how she played and she continues to play well for us.”

THIRD PLACE-
The first doubles team of Emma Borowicz and Catherine Tiedemann finished third place. They won their first match against a team from Perham and lost a three-set match, 10-5 in the third set, in the semi-finals to a team from Hibbing. The teams bounced back with a two-set victory over a team from Detroit Lakes in the third-place match. “They are two veterans for us and looked like they are mid-season form already,” said Coach Brekken. “They lost to a very good Hibbing team in the semi-finals and that Hibbing team easily won the championship so they had a pretty good day. It was good for them to see a team like Hibbing this early in the season.”

FOURTH PLACE –
The second doubles team of Emma Osborn and Eden Haller finished fourth place. They won their first match over a team from New London-Spicer in three sets. They lost the semi-final match in straight sets before losing a heartbreaker three-set third-place match. The Crookston girls lost the third set 10-8 and finished fourth. “The girls played well and competed hard until the last point,” said Coach Brekken. “They had a roller coaster of a match in the third-place match and it is too bad they came up short because they played hard today and should be proud of the way they played. They competed hard all day.”

The rest of the team had some solid matches and most importantly had three challenging matches against quality competition. “The thing I really liked from the girls today is how all of them competed and played hard until the last point. They battled the wind, which was a challenge and we played well,” said Coach Brekken. “As always, we have a lot of things to work on, but we are taking more positives away than negatives and that is good in a tough tournament like this one.”

Crookston will travel to Park Rapids on Tuesday to play in the Park Rapids Quadrangular.
