Pirate Volleyball Beats Red Lake Falls 3-0

The Crookston Pirate Volleyball team won a hard-fought 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-21) match over the Red Lake Falls Eagles in a match played in Robert Matzke gymnasium at Red Lake Falls.
Crookston started the match by going on a 5-0 run behind three kills from Rachel Hefta and a Casey Cwikla kill. Red Lake Falls slowly clawed back and tied the set at 13, 14, 15, and 17 before Emma Boll gave Crookston the lead for good with a kill. Crookston led 22-19 when Red Lake Falls had three straight hitting/passing errors and the Pirates won the first set 25-19. “The girls wanted it, they continued to push,” said Pirate Coach Ashley Stopa. “We did a good job of pushing to the other side and that makes a big difference. The girls did a good job and with the first day of school today, it was nice to start with a win.”
In the second set, Red Lake Falls took a 2-0 lead with kills from MaKenzie Williams and Clara Girdler, but Crookston bounced back and led 6-5 when they went on a 5-0 run with two Eagle errors, a Hefta ace, a Hailey Seaver kill and a Boll kill for a 10-5 lead. Crookston led 13-8 and went on another 5-0 run with two more Red Lake Falls errors, a Hefta kill, a Boll ace, and a Sydney Anderson kill for an 18-8 lead. “I think our runs are because we are starting to eliminate our errors,” said Coach Stopa. Red Lake Falls didn’t go down without a fight and a few points later went on a 5-0 run of their own to climb within a 19-14 deficit. “Our girls don’t give up,” said Eagle Coach Nikki Gullingsrud. “That is one thing the girls have done well so far this year, is they don’t give up and play hard.” Crookston outscored the Eagles 6-5 the rest of the way for a 25-19 win for a 2-0 match lead. The second set win was the first of the year for Crookston. “It was nice, we decided to push in the second set and we really wanted to win one for the first time,” said Pirate Coach Stopa. “We did a good job in the first two games of keeping the serves on them. I don’t think we missed many serves and that makes a big difference.”
Crookston had a good start to the third set with a 4-1 run behind a couple of Hefta kills and a Katelynn Genereux ace. “We did a good job in the first few points,” said Coach Stopa. “We continued to have good serves and pushed them a little bit.” Red Lake Falls battled back to tie the set at 10, 11, 16 and 17. Red Lake Falls had an attack error and Dani Boyle had a kill for a 19-17 Pirate lead. A few points later Crookston led 22-20 and Red Lake Falls had an attack go out of bounds, followed by a Morgan Hoiland kill and after an Eagle kill, Seaver had a kill for the set and match victory. “We let them catch up and when Dani got that kill that helped us,” said Coach Stopa. “Seaver did a good job with the kill and did a good job tonight.” Red Lake Falls was close all night, but consistency was the downfall. “We weren’t consistent at all. We show we have potential. We did a lot of nice things, but we need to be consistent and be able to put it together,” said Eagle Coach Gullingsrud. “Give credit to Crookston, they did a very good job and hit well and served tough.”
Crookston improves to 2-2 on the year and will host Sacred Heart on Thursday on Parent’s Night. You can hear the match on KROX.
Red Lake Falls drops to 0-3 on the year and will travel to Warren on Thursday to play the Warren-Alvarado-Oslo Ponies.
