The Crookston Pirate Wrestlers won six of the last seven matches to pull away for a 45-24 dual victory over the Fosston-Bagley Brawlers in a Section 8A matchup in Fosston.
The match started with Evin Trudeau taking a 7-2 lead into the second period of the 106-pound match. Ethan started the second period with a reversal and a 9-2 lead before winning by a pin at 3:46 and Crookston had a 6-0 lead.
Crookston was open at 113 and the match was tied at 6. Gavyn Hlucny came out strong in his 120-pound match with a takedown for a 2-0 lead before winning by a pin with 12 seconds left in the first period to give Crookston a 12-6 lead. Foston-Bagley’s Aiden Wolfe, son of Crookston High School graduate and Fosston-Bagley Head Coach Pat Wolfe, won by a pin in the first period to tie the match at 12.
Casey Weiland gave the Pirates the lead when he started the 132-pound match with a takedown for a 2-0 lead before he won by a pin 70 seconds into the match for an 18-12 lead. Fosston-Bagley won the next two matches by decisions to tie the match at 18. Braxton Volker gave the Pirates the lead for good when he started with a takedown before getting a pin at 1:35 for a 24-18 lead. Layten Fuentes won by a forfeit for a 30-18 lead and Spencer Ness took a 2-0 lead into the second period at 170-pounds. The match was tied at 2-2 early in the second when Ness had an escape followed by a takedown for a 5-2 lead. Ness took a 5-3 lead into the third period and started with an escape and followed it with a takedown and held on for an 8-3 victory for a 33-18 lead. Neither team had anybody wrestle at 182-pounds for a double-forfeit. At 195-pounds, Hunter Knutson won his match by a pin in 33-seconds and at 220-pounds, Ethan Boll won by a pin in 40 seconds and Crookston led 45-18.
Fosston-Bagley won the heavyweight match by a forfeit, but Crookston won the match 45-24 to get a big Section 8A dual victory.
Crookston wins their seventh dual in a row and improves to 12-5 on the year and will be at the Thief River Falls tournament on Saturday. Fosston-Bagley drops to 3-13 in duals.
