The Crookston Pirate Wrestling team won all four of their matches to win the Mahnomen-Waubun dual tournament at the Mahnomen High School gymnasium. Crookston had seven wrestlers (Ethan Bowman, Nolan Dans, Zach Brown, Cameron Weiland, Ethan Boll, Lukas Meier, and Damian Hodgson) won all four of their matches. Lukas Meier was named the dual tournament Most Valuable Wrestler. “He went out and attacked his opponents and that is what good wrestlers do, they score early and score often,” said Coach Hanson. “Lukas really wrestled well and he was fun to watch tonight.”
Crookston vs Red Lake County Central-
Crookston won five matches by forfeit (30 points) and cruised to a 64-18 victory over the Red Lake County Central Mustangs. Ethan Bowman and Nolan Dans won by forfeit and Zach Brown won his match at 120 pounds by a pin 23 seconds into the match. At 126 pounds, Braxton Volker won by pin 44 seconds into the match. “I thought the guys came out strong and we were wrestling well out of the gates,” said Pirate Coach Wes Hanson. Cameron Weiland received a forfeit win before Hunter Knutson won his match at 138 pounds by pin in 44 seconds to give the Pirates a 36-0 lead. RLCC won their first match of the evening at 145 pounds. At 152 pounds, Ethan Boll got the Pirates back to their winning ways with a pin in 50 seconds. Cade DeLeon won by a forfeit before Lukas Meier had the first full match of the day. Meier won his match at 170 pounds by going the full six minutes with a 12-3 victory. “Lukas wrestled a very good kid and had three really nice takedowns to start the match,” said Coach Hanson. “He wrestled well and picked up a nice win.” Hunter Kresl, at 182 pounds picked up his first varsity win with a forfeit and Damian Hodgson won by a pin at 195 pounds for the final Pirate victory of the match. Crookston won the match 64-16. “It was a good start to the day,” said Coach Hanson. “I thought the guys wrestled pretty well.”

Crookston vs Wadena-Deer Creek
The Pirates started the match strong with two pins and beat Wadena-Deer Creek 39-28.
The match started with Ethan Bowman winning by a pin in 34 seconds and Nolan Dans winning by a pin with four seconds left in the first period. “It was a great start and Ethan was able to throw the legs in for a banana split move to get the pin,” said Coach Hanson. “Nolan wrestled very well and had a nice win for us too.” Zach Brown followed with a forfeit victory to give the Pirates an 18-0 lead. Cameron Weiland got a forfeit victory and Ethan Boll won by a pin in 20 seconds and Crookston led 30-16. After a WDC win by pin, Crookston’s Meier won a 9-5 decision and Damian Hodgson won by forfeit. “Lukas had another solid match and had to go a full six minutes after building a really good lead and shows he has a lot of good takedowns,” said Coach Hanson.

Crookston vs Pelican Rapids
Crookston won the first six matches for a 36-0 lead and cruised to a 43-30 victory over the Pelican Rapids Vikings.
Ethan Bowman started the day off with another win by pin, Nolan Dans won by decision and Zach Brown and Braxton Volker won by pins. Cameron Weiland won his match at 132 pounds by decision and Hunter Knutson won by a pin for a 36-0 lead. “We got off to another good start,” said Coach Hanson. “Braxton Volker was physical and secured the pin and a good way to get us going.” Crookston lost the next match before Ethan Boll won his match by pin in 22 seconds and Lukas Meier went another full six minutes for a 10-6 victory and Damian Hodgson won his match by decision. “Lukas wrestled another quality opponent and for him to beat another good kid when it mattered was a big win,” said Coach Hanson. “Damian had a nice win and controlled the match and it was one of his better matches of the season.”

Crookston finished the evening strong with a 54-19 victory over Mahnomen-Waubun.
Ethan Bowman started the match with a pin in 33 seconds, Nolan Dans won by decision and Zach Brown won by a forfeit for a 16-0 lead. Cameron Weiland won by forfeit, Ethan Boll won an exciting 5-3 decision before Cade DeLeon won his first ever (non-forfeit) varsity match with a pin in the second period. “There were a number of good matches and Cade DeLeon was able to get the first takedown and he was trailing 11-6 at one point and the kid tried to stand up and Cade broke him down to the mat and got the cradle and got the pin,” said Coach Hanson. “It was his first win at the varsity level and it was exciting for him.” Lukas Meier won by a pin and Hunter Kresl also won his first non-forfeit match by a pin. “Hunter picking up the first win of his career so it was pretty fun,” said Coach Hanson. Damian Hodgson and Blake Fee won by forfeit and Crookston won 54-19.
