The Crookston Pirate Wrestling team had six open weights and that was too many points given up at the start and lost to the #1 seed United North Central Warriors 71-6 in the Section 8A Team Wrestling tournament quarterfinal in Sebeka.
CROOKSTON VS UNITED NORTH CENTRAL –
Crookston knew they were in trouble in the team score with six open weights, which meant they gave up 36 points at the start of the match.
At 114 pounds, Gabriel Perala was taken down and was able to battle for a while before getting pinned with nine seconds left in the first period.
UNC won the next four matches by forfeit and led 36-0. At 145 pounds, Lucas Perala was taken down early, and it looked like he would get loose before his opponent got a pin with 15 seconds left in the first period for a 42-0 lead.
At 152 pounds, Jose Arriaga was taken down three times and scored three escapes before being taken down again, trailing 8-3 at the end of the first period. Jose gave up an escape, was taken down, and trailed 11-3. Arriaga scored an escape before he was taken down, and with 40 seconds left in the second period, he trailed 20-5 and lost by a tech fall. UNC led the dual 47-0.
At 160 pounds, Lukas Helgeson, in his first year of wrestling, took to the mat and battled for a while before an experienced opponent was able to stick Lukas with a nice move for a pin with 20 seconds left in the first period for a 53-0 lead.
Crookston’s only win of the night came at 172 pounds as Carter Coauette started his match with a takedown in the first two seconds for a 2-0 lead. Carter followed with three near-fall points and added some more for an 8-0 lead at the end of the period. Carter started the second period down and scored an escape before another takedown for an 11-0 lead, and with 14 seconds left in the period, he got the pin to get the Pirates trailed 53-6.
UNC won the 189-pound match by pin in 40 seconds and won at 215 pounds by forfeit for a 65-6 lead.
At Heavyweight, Riley Helgeson came out strong for Crookston with a takedown and a 2-0 lead. Riley gave up an escape and took a 2-1 lead into the second period. Riley started the second period on the bottom and scored an escape for a 3-1 lead. With 48 seconds left in the period, his opponent tied the match with a takedown. Riley ended the period with an escape and took a 4-3 lead into the third period. In the third, Riley gave up a reversal and trailed 5-4 before getting stuck and was pinned and UNC won the dual 71-6.
UNC improves to 22-4 on the year and will take on Barnesville in the semi-finals on Friday in Fertile.
