PIRATES DEFENSE FORCES THREE TURNOVERS IN WIN OVER FRAZEE FOOTBALL

The Crookston Pirate Football team forced three turnovers and won their second straight game on Friday night over the Frazee Hornets 33-14.

Crookston Pirate Football vs Frazee (Week 4)

1st Quarter-

The game did not start the way Crookston drew it up. On the first play of the game, Frazee would go right to the run, and Jake Nagel would break free with a 67-yard touchdown run. A PAT by Brady Crabtree makes it 7-0 twenty-one seconds in the game. The Pirates would go three-and-out and the Hornets would get the ball back at their own twenty after a Pirate punt. The Pirates defense would stand tall to force a three-and-out for Frazee, and the Pirates would get the ball back around midfield. A personal foul on Frazee would move Crookston to the Hornets 23 yard line. The very next play, the Pirates’ Ethan Boll would run to the left, breaking multiple tackles and maintaining his balance to make it to the endzone. The PAT by Jake Erickson would make it 7-7 with 7:06 left in the first quarter. On the next Hornet possession, Crookston would force a third and long, and the Pirates’ Tanner Giese would blitz through the line and get to Frazee’s Carter Sonnenberg to force a fumble. Hunter Knutson would scoop up the ball, and bring it the rest of the way to the endzone to make this a 13-7 game. Another Jake Erickson PAT would make it 14-7 with 5:39 left in the first quarter. On the Hornets’ next drive, on a third and three, the Hornets would go to the air for the first time. The Pirates did intercept the pass, but defensive pass interference to keep Frazee’s drive alive. The very next play, the Hornets go back to the air, and is intercepted again. This time by Antonio Romero and this one counted. The Pirates would get the ball on the Hornets’ 37 yard line, unfortunately, couldn’t take advantage of the great field position and turn it over on downs. The Hornets’ offense started to get some momentum with two first downs. On the last play of the quarter, Crookston’s Tanner Giese would bust through the line to end the quarter 14-7 and force a third and long.

2nd Quarter-

The Pirates would get the ball from a Hornet punt on their own 10 yard line. On third and three, the Pirates would get a Jack Doda short pass to Carter Coauette to the right flats would find some space and get the first down on a big gain. The Hornets would blow up the very next play to tackle Ethan Boll in the backfield to make it 2nd and long and stop any Pirate momentum. The Pirates’ drive would sputter and a punt from Jake Erickson’s punt into the wind would get put the Hornets on their own 32 yard line with 8:00 left in the half. Frazee would get a first down to gain some momentum, then the Hornet’s Brady Crabtree would break a run to the right side. He would get a block and find the edge and use his speed to make it to the endzone for a 53 yard run to tie the game 14-14 with 6:15 left in the half. The Pirates would have it 3rd and 7 on the Hornet 47 yard line, and Jack Doda would roll out to his right and find Carter Coauttee again. Another short pass, and Coautte would tip-toe down the line for a gain of 29 yards. Ethan Boll would punch it in from the 18 yard line thanks to a big block from Jaren Bailey to let the Pirates take back the lead 19-14 with 4:06 left in the half. The Hornet’s Brady Crabtree would help out Frazee with a 40 yard kick-off return to the Pirates 40 yard line for excellent field position. On 3rd and 7, the Hornets’ Jake Nagel would break through three tackles to get the first down. An unsportsmanlike penalty on Frazee would back up to the Pirates’ 41 yard line. A Sonnenberg pass would slip through the fingers of the receiver and George Widman was in the right place at the right time to intercept the pass with 2:58 left in the half. On 3rd and 5, the Pirates’ Ethan Boll would run through a few Hornets and found open space to and run to the endzone for a 52 yard score to make it 26-14 with 1:27 left in the half. A kickoff that goes out of bounds would give the ball at the Hornets’ 35 yard line. The Pirate’s defense would stand tall and the half ends with Crookston up 26-14.

3rd Quarter-

The Pirates would open the half with a fantastic field position with an Antonio Romero return to the Hornets’ 47 yard line. A dropped snapped and an incomplete pass would force the Pirates to punt. Jake Erickson’s punt into the endzone would give Frazee the ball at their own 20 yard line with 10:09 left in the quarter. Jake Nagel would break a tackle in the backfield to get the first down to continue the Hornets’ drive. The Pirates would bust through the line for a tackle for a loss, a delay of game penalty, and a false start would pin the Hornets back for a 2nd and 22. The Pirates send the blitz and almost got to Sonnenberg before he would throw it away to force 3rd and 22. Tanner Giese would blitz to slow down the runner, and Hunter Knutson would finish the tackle to force a three and out. A Crabtree punt into the wind would result in the Pirates getting the ball back at the Hornets’ 39 yard line with 7:00 left in the quarter. A 6 yard Ethan Boll run on 3rd and 9 would make it 4th and short. A Tanner Giese run would get a yard and a half to give the Pirates a big first down. Ethan Boll on the very next play would get a huge lane to run on the left side of the field for a 26 yard run to make it 1st and goal from the 3 yard line. Ethan Boll would be stopped on his first attempt with only a gain of one. The following play, Jack Doda would keep it himself and push through the pile for a 2 yard run and extend the Pirate lead 33-14 with 4:33 left in the quarter. Another Jake Erickson kickoff would go out of bounds, the Hornets would once again get the ball at their 35 yard line. After a 5 yard Jake Nagel run, the Pirates would jump offside to give the Hornets a 2nd and inches. Nagel would get back to back first downs on the following two plays, with  1 yard and 10 yard runs. The Hornets would have back to back dropped snaps to force a 4th and 13 at the Pirates 48 yard line and 1:20 left in the 3rd quarter. Ethan Boll would get into the backfield off a high snap to get the first sack of the game for the Pirates and force a turnover on downs. The end of the 3rd quarter would end with the Pirates in the lead 33-14. 

4th Quarter-

The quarter would start with the Pirates running the ball to keep the clock running. Frazee’s defense would stand tall to force a turnover on downs, taking over the ball at their own 27 yard line with 9:55 left in the game. On the first play of the drive, Tanner Giese burst through the line once again, and hit Sonnenberg before he could get the handoff. A false start on Frazee pins them back to their own 15 yard line line for a 2nd and 22. After two runs by Nagel for a total of 7 yards, the Hornets would punt the ball away. Frazee’s defense continued its excellent play in this quarter, helped by a couple Pirate penalties, forces another punt by Jake Erickson. Crookston would give the Hornets nothing to work with, forcing another Crabtree punt. The Pirates start at their own 43 yard line with 4:03 minutes left in the game with Crookston leading 33-14. A few new Pirates would get into the game on this drive, including a Gavyn Hlucny run for a gain of 6 yards. A too-many men penalty on the Pirates forces another punt by Jake Erickson to give the ball back to Hornets at their own 23 with 1:39 left in the game. Frazee would run the ball two times for 9 yards, and the clock would run down to zero. The Pirates would get the win, the final score 33-14.

Crookston improves to 2-2 on the season and Frazee drops to 2-2.
