The Crookston Planning Commission met Tuesday, March 17, to approve a conditional use to have the Mount St. Benedict Cemetery officially recorded in the County Recorders Office. Recording the cemetery will establish a record of the cemetery for when the Sisters, who are not recruiting new members, are gone.
Building Official Greg Hefta said Widseth Smith Nolting did the survey on behalf of the Sisters. “We did a sight and survey plat that Widseth Smith Nolting did for the Sisters of St. Benedict,” said Hefta. “They wanted to make sure that this was platted correctly for the state that they will not use or disturb that site in the future. We are moving forward and its definitely going to be a cemetery in the future.”
The location has been used as a cemetery for the Sisters of Mount St. Benedict since approximately 1940. The commission also approved a new hospital sign under the conditional use permit previously approved for RiverView Health, even though it’s larger than the previous sign explained Hefta. “The sign that was presented previously was a different vendor and a smaller dimension,” said Hefta. “The Planning Commission said that they’ve previously done a conditional usage and knowing that RiverView needs a new sign for the new facility, so we’re moving ahead to agree to the new sign by a different vendor even though it’s a little larger dimension.”
The final action from the commission was replacing Joe Kresl, who was appointed to the City Council, as chair. Wayne Schenck was made chair and Bryan Schipper was made the co-chair for the commission.
