POLK COUNTY COMMISSIONERS MEET NEW POLK COUNTY SHERIFF K9 BUFFY

The Polk County Commissioners met the Polk County Sheriff’s Office’s new K9 Buffy and handler Deputy Kyle Olson this week.  Olson, who has been with the Sheriff’s Office for six years told the commissioners he always wanted to be a K9 officer and filled them in on his background preceding the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.  “I’m originally from Brooklyn Park and went to North Hennepin Community College for my two-year degree,” said Olson.  “While I was going for my degree, I was a community service officer for the City of Robbinsdale.  After I graduated college I went to the Williams County Sheriff’s Office in Williston, ND.  And then ended up wanting to come back to Minnesota to be closer to family and now we’re here in Polk County.  I’ve always wanted to be a K9 officer ever since I started going to school to be a cop because you’ve got a partner with you all the time.  There is nothing more loyal than having a dog with you.”

Olson said things have been going well at home as his family and Buffy get acquainted with each other.  “It’s going pretty good at home,” said Olson.  “She is getting along with the children and the wife pretty good and listens for the most part.  The first day of training is March 23 and it’s approximately 12 to 14 weeks long.  We’ll be going through the obedience, drug detection, and tracking while we’re down that.  She’ll be able to go back and find things people have thrown out of their car.  Or if we need to go find evidence from a scene or something we’ll be able to track it and locate it hopefully.”

Buffy and her training were donated by Mark McDonough of McDonough K9 when he learned the county was raising funds to buy a K9 and the required equipment for a K9 unit.  The Sheriff’s Office is still raising funds to outfit Olson’s squad car for a K9 and other required equipment and will be holding a dodgeball tournament fundraiser at noon on Saturday, March 28 at the Crookston Sports Center.

Deputy Olson and Buffy are scheduled to make their first public “Dodge IT for the K9 Unit” dodgeball tournament.  The cost is $50 for teams of six, plus two benchwarmers.  Teams are encouraged to wear unique team attire and there will be prizes for winners. On-site registration will begin at 11:00 a.m., but space is limited so for more information or to register ahead of time call 280-3279 or 251-0673 or email james.tadman@co.polk.mn.us or kyle.olson@co.polk.mn.us.
