POLK COUNTY LAUNCHES ORGANIC COMPOSTING PROGRAM

Polk County Environmental Services are happy to announce their Organics Composting Program is being kicked off Thursday, April 22nd! Kits will be ready to be picked up during office hours 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. starting Thursday. Currently, they are only giving out one free starter kit per household. However, if you would like an additional starter kit you may purchase another for $10. Included in the kit is info on the program, acceptable items list, 3 bands to hold bags on the buckets as well as 50 bags. Bag refills are $5 for a bundle.

These bags are specially made to break down with organics compost once they get to their composting area and it is a requirement of their operations permit to run this program.  They ask that only this certified product be used and cannot be switched out with similar products. The permit also requires all composting materials to be contained in the bags when being collected at the transfer station, so do not empty loose material into the compost bin at our facility which is another requirement of the compost permit.

There will be a new collection bin solely for the organics composting program under the west canopy between the household garbage bins. The doors will have a latch to open to empty the buckets into the bin. Please remember to close this securely. Please read through all materials thoroughly and if you have any additional questions you can contact their office at 218-281-6445.

More information about the program was discussed (here).
