POLK COUNTY SOYBEAN AND CORN GROWERS DONATE MEAT TO FOOD SHELVES

The Polk County Soybean & Corn Growers are putting their checkoff dollars to good use by donating $1,050 in meat to food shelves in Fosston, Crookston and East Grand Forks.

“It is very important and helpful to those in need,” Board President Kevin Krueger said. “The area  food shelves do tremendous work, and we are proud to help the families in our communities.”

Krueger noted that Minnesota’s soybean farmers play an important role in providing feed for the meat that ends up on the family table.

“Loaves and Fishes Food Shelf in Fosston is thankful to receive this generous donation,” Manager Sandy Johnson said. “The quality and variety of the fresh protein items are exceptional.  Our mission is to provide two to three days’ worth of food to families in our service area who are food insecure. We typically serve over 120 families each month. This donation will add a ‘wow factor’ to our food choices for those we serve. Rarely are we able to offer fresh meat. This is the best.”

The Care and Share of Crookston, Inc. is a regional shelter that was established in 1986. The vision is to provide essential needs in a warm, welcoming and safe environment; strength-based supportive services that offer hope and empowerment for growth and assistance in finding housing and building connections. The Food Shelf extended hours are Monday 1-4 p.m., Wednesday 1-5 p.m. and Friday 3-6 p.m. The Food Shelf allows two visits per month.

The EGF Food Shelf is an emergency food shelf, nonprofit organization serving the most vulnerable people in the community. It serves 200-260 families per month with enough food for up to 12 days. (This includes 3,584 adults, 2,043 children, 509 seniors, 2,212 families in 2023). Last year EGF gave out 321,850 pounds of food. These people are families in hardship, children, seniors, vulnerable adults and veterans. EGF does not turn anyone away in need. The nonprofit supports one paid employee and 35 volunteers who work hard to ensure the community members have food to eat. EGF buys food from the food bank and depends on support from the community. Without the donations from our community, the organization would not be able to meet its goal.
The food shelf assists areas in East Grand Forks, Bygland, Fisher, Alvarado, and Oslo.
