Several notable updates have been coming from the City of Crookston’s Public Works Department this past week.
ROAD CONSTRUCTION
The city of Crookston has been working on several construction projects in town for around a month. The roads in Crookston that have undergone construction include-
- North Broadway (6th Street to Fisher Ave)
- Houston Avenue (Hunter Street to South Ash Street)
- 3rd Avenue Southwest (Bruce Street to Old Trunk Highway 75)
All of the projects appear to be on track to finish pretty soon. “North Broadway up there by Casey’s that should be done next week. They just have sod left to put in, maybe some black dirt packing in some areas. 3rd Avenue Southwest will be completed here as well early next week; both those streets/sidewalks are open,” said Public Works Director Chuck Getsman. “Then, as far as Houston goes, they are going to keep that street closed off. Early next week, they are going to make some joint cuts and do some sealing, then it’s just refilling the sod over there as well, then they should be finished.”
RIVER WATCH
The Public Works Department also participated in a river watch for the Red Lake River this past weekend. “We received a text message/email from the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration,” said Getsman. “We were told that the water might be cresting a little higher than 13.3 feet, possibly 14 feet. So we took that information and then informed our staff that what we would have to do is just watch our storm gates.”
Getsman periodically sent a crew out to check on the storm gates throughout the evening. “We actually did hit 13.3 feet, and that is the height where we start investigating the lift by Myrtle Street, so our guy went out there to see if any water was flowing back,” Getsman. “There wasn’t and the flap gate was holding. We checked it again around two to three in the morning, and there was still no water coming in. The water levels had dropped by then, so we are all clear.”
