The Red Lake County American Legion Baseball team lost a heartbreaker by a 5-4 score to Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton in the first round of the Division II Northwest Sub-state tournament in Crookston.
FIRST INNING-
Red Lake County started the game with three ground outs to the shortstop.
DGF’s Dylan Anderson was hit by a pitch with one out before the next batters lined out and struck out.
SECOND INNING-
Red Lake County’s Kegan Schmitz and Riley Broden walked to lead off the inning. Riley Broden singled to load the bases before Collin Taggart hit a hard ground ball to shortstop. The ball went under the glove of the DGF fielder, and two runs scored for a 2-0 lead. The next three batters were retired with two strikeouts and a groundout.
DGF’s Jace Baumgartner walked with one out before a strikeout and a walk to Zander Duetsch. The next batter popped out.
THIRD INNING –Â
Red Lake County was retired in 1-2-3 fashion with a ground out, fly out, and a ground out.
DGF was retired in 1-2-3 fashion with a pop out, ground out, and strikeout.
FOURTH INNING-
Red Lake County’s Ben Gullingsrud started off the fourth inning with a single before he was caught stealing. The next two batters struck out.
DGF’s Cayson Bergee singled before the next two batters lined out to center field and struck out. The next batter was hit by a pitch before a line out to left field and Red Lake County took a 2-0 lead into the fifth inning.
FIFTH INNING-
Red Lake County was retired in 1-2-3 fashion with a ground out, a strikeout, and a fly out.
DGF’s Alex Anderson singled with one out, and Dylan Anderson advanced the runner on a sacrifice bunt. A pitch hit Landon Johnson, Bergee walked, and Wes Hovver singled to left field to score a run. Jace Baumgartner singled to left field to score a run, and the ball got by the left fielder, and two more runs scored to give DGF a 4-2 lead.
SIXTH INNING-
Red Lake County answered when Brock Seeger walked and Kegan Schmitz singled with one out. Gullingsrud walked to lad the bases. After a strikeout, Taggart walked to score a run. Another run scored on a passed ball to tie the game 4-4.
DGF’s Duetsch singled to start the bottom of the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a ground out, Dylan Anderson ripped a line drive to centerfield and the throw home wasn’t in time and DGF took a 5-4 lead.
SEVENTH INNING-
Red Lake County’s Will Gieseke walked with one out, but the next two batters were retired and DGF won the game 5-4.
Red Lake County’s season ends with an 11-7 record. DGF improves to 31-6 on the year and they will play the winner of Warroad and Hawley at 11:00 a.m. on Friday.
