Red Lake County Legion Baseball beats Crookston falls to Fosston

The Red Lake County American Legion Baseball team beat Crookston 8-1, but lost to Fosston 9-5 in the first and second round of the Northwest Sub-state American Legion Baseball tournament.

FIRST INNING-
Red Lake County’s Gunnar Halvorson singled with one out, stole second base and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Ben Gullingsrud walked and stole second base before the next two batters were retired. 
Crookston’s Parker Kelly led off the bottom of the inning with a walk. Matt Contreras blasted a line drive off the right field fence for a double and runners were at second and third base. The next three batters were retired.

SECOND INNING-
The first two Red Lake County batters were retired before they got a two-out rally going. Denny Lanctot and Boe Nelson walked before Will Gieseke doubled to the left-center field gap to score a run. Gunnar Halvorson doubled to the left-center field gap to score two runs, and Red Lake County took a 3-0 lead.

Crookston was retired in 1-2-3 fashion with two strikeouts and a ground out.

THIRD INNING – 
Red Lake County’s Kegan Schmitz led off with a double down the right field line. After a groundout moved Schmitz over to third base, Colin Taggart singled to center field to score a run for a 4-0 lead. Taggart was caught stealing before Lanctot walked, and the next batter struck out.
Crookston’s Carter Fee led off the bottom of the inning, getting hit by a pitch. Parker Kelly laid down a beautiful bunt, and the throw to first sailed into right field, and Crookston had runners on second and third base. Contreras hit a fly ball to left field to score a run to get within a 4-1 deficit. The next two batters struck out. 

FOURTH INNING-
Red Lake County’s Gieseke led off the inning with a double, a pitch hit Halvorson before he stole second base. On the throw to second, Gieseke stole home to give Red Lake County a 5-1 lead. 
Crookston’s Melsa led off with a walk, and Lucas Perala reached on an error before the next three batters struck out.

FIFTH INNING-
Red Lake County’s Riley Broden singled and moved over to second base on a Taggart sacrifice bunt. Lanctot singled, and a pitch hit Boe Nelson. The next two batters were retired.
Crookston’s first two batters were retired before Teagen Lubinski walked, and a pitch hit Gavyn Hlucny. The next batter hit into a fielder’s choice and the inning was over.

SIXTH INNING-
Red Lake County’s Ben Gullingsrud walked before Brock Seeger crushed a line drive over the centerfield fence for a two-run home run and a 7-1 lead. After a walk and a double play. A pitch hit Taggart, Lanctot singled, and a pitch hit Nelson. The next two batters were retired.
Crookston was retired in 1-2-3 fashion with a strikeout, ground out, and a pop out.

SEVENTH INNING-
Red Lake County’s Gullingsrud and Seeger singled before a pitch hit Schmitz to load the bases. The next batter popped out before Crookston turned a doubleheader to end the half-inning.
Crookston’s Isaiah Donarski reached on a one-out walk. The next two batters were retired and the game was over with Red Lake County winning 8-1.

Crookston drops to 11-14 on the year and will take on Thief River Falls in a loser-out game. Red Lake County improves to 10-5 on the year and will play Fosston in the winners bracket game.

Red Lake County vs Fosston

The Red Lake County Legion Baseball team hit three home runs but were outpaced by the Fosston offense, as they fell 9-5 in the winner’s bracket of the American Legion Sub-State Tournament.

FIRST INNING-
Red Lake County was set down in order in the top of the 1st, on a flyout and two groundouts.
Fosston got started quickly in the bottom of the 1st inning, as Ryne Duppong walked to start things off. After stealing second, Brodie Sather drove him home with a base hit to make it 1-0 Fosston. After a strikeout, back-to-back walks then loaded the bases. Jakob Rudie grounded out, driving in a run to make it 2-0, and Will Christen drove in the next two with a two-run single to make it 4-0 Fosston, which would stick as the inning came to an end.

SECOND INNING-
RLC looked to cut into the deficit early, and they did so with a bang. Brock Seeger and Kegan Schmitz led off the inning with back-to-back solo home runs to dead center field to cut the lead to 4-2. The next three batters would be retired on two strikeouts and a groundout.
After a leadoff flyout to start the inning, Duppong walked for the second time. After a Sather base hit, Boushee delivered with an RBI single to make it 5-2 Fosston. After a foulout, with runners on second and third, Tanner Vig helped his own case with a two-run single, putting Fosston up 7-2 at the end of the inning.

THIRD INNING –
RLC got things started in the 3rd with back-to-back singles by Denny Lanctot and Will Gieseke, but Lanctot was then picked off at second by Tanner Vig. Gunner Halvorsen then singled to put runners on the corners, and after a strikeout, Seeger walked tom load the bases for Schmitz. However, he grounded out to short to end the inning, leaving them loaded.
Fosston was retired in order in the bottom of the inning, on a strikeout, a groundout and a flyout.

FOURTH INNING-
After two quick groundouts to start the 4th, Boe Nelson and Denny Lanctot recorded back-to-back singles. Then Will Gieseke was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Gunner Halvorsen. However, just like the 3rd, RLC left them loaded, as a flyout ended the inning.
Fosston pushed the gas pedal again in the home half of the inning, with a leadoff walk for Duppong, his third, and a base hit by Sather put two on. A passed ball put the runners on second and third, and back-to-back sacrifice flies by Boushee and Mulry made it 9-2 Fosston through 4 innings.

FIFTH INNING-
RLC led things off with a single by Ben Gullingsrud, but the next three batters would be retired on two flyouts and a groundout, keeping the score at 9-2.
Fosston was retired in order in the bottom of the 5th, on a popout and two groundouts.

SIXTH INNING-
RLC got the 6th inning started with a leadoff single by Colin Taggart. After a groundout, a Lanctot single put runners on the corners with one away. However, Gieseke was next, and he grounded into a 6-3 double play to end the inning, keeping RLC off the scoreboard.
Fosston got a one-out walk by Ryne Duppong, his fourth of the game, but the next three batters went down to quickly end the inning.

SEVENTH INNING-
Gunner Halvorsen was hit by a pitch to start the top of the 7th, and after a force play, Brock Seeger walked to put two on. Vig would then be pulled for Parker Nelson, and he proceeded to give up a three-run homer to Kegan Schmitz, his second of the night, to cut the lead to 9-5. However, that would be all of the magic, as Nelson struck out the last two batters to end the game, clinching a 9-5 win.

Red Lake County drops to 10-6, and will play Roseau at 1:30 Sunday afternoon in an elimination game.
