Red Lake County Legion Baseball beats Roseau and TRF, finish 3rd and advance

The Red Lake County American Legion Baseball team beat the Roseau American Legion Post #24 8-1 in a loser-out game in the Northwest Sub-state American Legion Baseball tournament and beat Thief River Falls 13-9 to finish third place and advance to the Sub-State tournament in Crookston on Thursday.

FIRST INNING-
Red Lake County’s Will Gieseke started the game with a triple to right field. Gunnar Halvorson drew a walk, and on the fourth ball, the pitch was wild, and Gieseke scored for a 1-0 lead. The next batter flew out to deep left field for the first out of the inning, and the next batter hit into a double play.
Roseau was retired in 1-2-3 fashion with two ground outs and a strikeout.

SECOND INNING-
Red Lake County’s Ben Gullingsrud led off the inning with a walk, Riley Broden singled for runners at the corners. The next batters popped out and struck out before Broden stole second base and Gullingsrud stole home for a 2-0 lead.
Red Lake County’s pitcher Boe Nelson continued to throw strikes and let his defense do the work as he retired Roseau in 1-2-3 fashion with a ground out and two pop outs.

THIRD INNING – 
Red Lake County continued to hit the ball as Halverson reached on an error, and Seeger and Kegan Schmitz singled to score a run for a 3-0 lead. After a pop out, Broden walked to load the bases. Collin Taggart reached on an error to score a run for a 4-0 lead. Denny Lanctot flew out to left field to knock in a run for a 5-0 lead.
Roseau’s Tanner Paulson led off the bottom of the inning with a walk. The next two batters struck out and grounded out to first, allowing the runner to advance to second base. Nelson would get the next batter to ground out to shortstop to retire Roseau.

FOURTH INNING-
Red Lake County looked to keep their scoring streak going with a Halverson walk and Seeger reached on an error. After an out, Gullingsrud singled to load the bases before the next two batters struck out.
Roseau’s first two battes were retired on a fly out and pop out before Connor Bachleitner singled on a bunt down the third base line for the first Roseau hit of the game. The next batter lined out to short stop.

FIFTH INNING-
Red Lake County’s Gieseke singled with two out before he was caught stealing.
Roseau’s Tanner Paulson singled to centerfield for the second Roseau hit of the game. The next two batters were retired to end the inning.

SIXTH INNING-
Red Lake County’s Halvorson led off the sixth inning with a single to centerfield
, and Seeger walked. The next batter hit into a fielder’s choice before Gullingsrud singled to score a run. Broden hit the ball up the middle to score another run. Taggart grounded out to score another run for an 8-0 Red Lake County lead.
Roseau’s AJ Klint and Eli Wensloff singled with one out before the next two batters struck out.

SEVENTH INNING-
Red Lake County’s Gieseke doubled with one out before a flyout and a Brock Seeger walk. Schmitz walked to load the bases before a pop out for the third out of the half-inning.
Roseau tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the inning when Jack Jerome drew a walk. After an out, Eli Kvien and A. Baumgartner singled to load the bases. AJ Klint singled to centerfield to score a run to get within an 8-1 deficit. The next batter flew out and the game was over with Red Lake County winning 8-1.

Red Lake County improves to 11-6 on the year. It will play Thief River Falls in the third-place game. Roseau ends the season at 11-9.

Red Lake County vs TRF – 3rd place

FIRST INNING-
Red Lake County started off the gme with the first two batters popping out and striking out. Pitches hit Brock Seeger and Kegan Schmitz before the next batter grounded out.
TRF’s Bodhi Mossestad singled to centerfield with one out before the next two batters were retired.

SECOND INNING-
Red Lake County’s Collin Taggart and Denny Lanctot drew walks with one out. Boe Nelson singled to load the bases before Gieseke singled to score a run for a 1-0 lead. Gunnar Halverson reached on a fielder’s choice, and Lanctot scored for a 2-0 lead. TRF tried to pick off Halverson at first base and threw the ball away, allowing a run to score for a 3-0 lead. RLC kept the outstanding plate appearances going as Seeger singled to score a run for a 4-0 lead.
TRF’s Noah Gonzalez started the bottom of the inning with a single. Bridger Wilcoz reached on an error and advanced to second base on another error for runners at second and third base with nobody out. The next batter flew out to left field, and RLC’s Halverson caught the ball and threw a perfect throw home, and the runner at third stopped and went back to third base. The next two batters struck out and grounded out and Red Lake County got out of a big jam.

THIRD INNING –
Red Lake County’s Gullingsrud doubled with one out. The next two batters struck out.
The first two Thief River Falls batters struck out and grounded out before Mossestad, Jameson Hurst, and Gonzalez walked to load the bases. The next batter popped out to first base and Red Lake County got out of another jam and took a 4-0 lead into the fourth inning.

FOURTH INNING-
Red Lake County’s Gieseke singled, Halvorson and Brock Seeger walked to load the bases with one out. TRF pitcher Wilcox hit the pitch-count limit and was replaced by Wade Nelson. Kegan Schmitz hit a deep fly ball to right field that was caught, but a run scored on the sacrifice fly to give Red Lake County a 5-0 lead. Riley Broden walked to load the bases. Boe Nelson walked to score a run for a 6-0 lead. Taggart singled to right field to score two runs for an 8-0 lead.
Thief River Falls answered in the bottom of the inning when Dylan Osowski doubled, Wade Nelson singled, and Ryan Flaagan walked to load the bases. Gannon Zutz singled to score two runs to bring TRF within an 8-2 loss. A pitch hit Cole Johnson to load the bases, and Mossestad doubled to the right-center field gap to score two more runs, and all of a sudden, TRF trailed 8-4 with runners at second and third base with nobody out.
The next batter lined out to centerfield, and RLC’s Gullingsrud caught the ball and threw a bullet to home, and the TRF runner on third had to stay. Gonzalez walked to load the bases and Wilcox hit a bloop single in shallow right field to score a run to get within an 8-5 deficit. The next batter hit a blooper to shallow centerfield and Gullingsrud made a diving catch. Thief River Falls runners all tried to advance without tagging up and were doubled up at third base and Red Lake County finally got out of the inning leading 8-5.

FIFTH INNING-
A pitch hit Red Lake County’s Nelson, and Gieseke and Halvorson walked to load the bases to start the inning. Brock Seeger
singled to left field to score two runs for a 10-5 lead. Riley Broden grounded out, and a run scored before Gullingsrud hit a two-run home run over the right field fence for a 13-5 lead.
TRF’s Nelson led off the bottom of the inning with a single, and Flaagan reached on an error that allowed a run to score to get within a 13-6 deficit. The next batter hit into a double play before a ground out ended the inning.

SIXTH INNING-
Red Lake County was retired in 1-2-3 fashion with a ground out, a strike out, and a fly out.
TRF’s Mossestad led off the bottom of the inning with a single, and the next batter lined out. After the next batter hit into a fielder’s choice, Wilcox singled before the next batter hit a ground ball to the right side of the infield, and it hit a TRF baserunner for the third out of the inning.

SEVENTH INNING-
Red Lake County added an insurance run with a Halvorson single. After two outs, a pitch hit Broden and Gullingsrud, and a run scored on a passed ball for a 14-6 lead.
TRF’s Flaagan singled with one out before the next batter struck out. Johnson walked and Mossestad doubled to score a run. Hurst singled to score two runs to get within a 14-9 deficit. Gonzalez was hit by a pitch before the next batter grounded out and Red Lake County won 14-9.

Red Lake County improves to 12-6 on the year and will take on Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton at 11:00 AM in Crookston on Thursday. KROX will have the game on with the RiverView Health pre-game show at 10:35. Thief River Falls drops to 13-15 and will play Wadena on Thursday at 6:30 PM in Crookston.
