The Red Lake Falls Eagle Softball team dropped their first game in extra innings, but then won by run rule in their second game, losing to East Polk 2-1 and then beating Mahnomen-Waubun 16-6 to stay alive in the Section 8A tournament.
FIRST INNING-
The Eagles got a one-out single from Shandi Nelson after a leadoff groundout, but Klipping struck out and Kayla Schafer grounded out to end the inning.
Kylie Klipping struck out the side for the Eagles in the first inning.
SECOND INNING-
In the top of the second inning, after Grace Knutson struck out, the Eagles got a single from Ella Breiland. She would steal second, and an error on the throw brought her all the way around, making it 1-0 Eagles. Miley Cota would then get a base hit of her own, but after she was moved over on a sacrifice bunt, Rowan Kennett struck out to end the inning.
Just like in the first inning, Kylie Klipping struck out the side in the second inning.
THIRD INNING –
After Schindler grounded out to start the inning, Nelson reached on a one-out walk. However, she would be left stranded there, as Klipping grounded out and Schafer struck out to end the inning.
East Polk once again went down in order in the bottom of the third inning, this time on two strikeouts and a groundout right back to Klipping.
FOURTH INNING-
The Eagles went down in order in the fourth inning, as Knutson grounded out, Breiland was called out on interference, and Cota flied out.
In the home half of the fourth, after back-to-back strikeouts, East Polk got their first two hits of the game on back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second. However, Alyssa Anderson would fly out to Breiland in center to end the inning.
FIFTH INNING
After Seeger and Kennett both popped out to start the inning, Schindler and Nelson reached on back-to-back walks to put two on with two away. However, Klipping would fly out to left to end the inning.
East Polk would go down in order in the 5th inning, on two strikeouts and a groundout.
SIXTH INNING
Red Lake Falls would go down in order in the sixth, as Schafer struck out, Knutson grounded out and Breiland struck out.
East Polk’s bats finally woke up in the home half of the 6th inning. After a strikeout, a one-out single and stolen base put the tying run at 2nd, where Lexi Mahlen would drive her in, tying the game at 1. A strikeout and flyout would end the inning, keeping the game tied at 1 through 6 innings.
SEVENTH INNING
In the seventh, Cota led off with a base hit, but her pinch runner, Amelia Warne, was caught stealing. Seeger then hit a double, but after she moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, Schindler popped out to end the inning and leave the runner stranded.
East Polk was retired in order in the seventh, sending the game to extra innings.
EIGHTH INNING
Nelson led off the 8th inning with a sharp base hit into center field, but would be stranded, as Klipping struck out, Schafer grounded out and Knutson popped out to end the inning.
In the home half, after Klipping’s 17th strikeout, Clara Kolden was hit by a pitch. She would then steal second, move to third on a wild pitch, and then scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly from Mahlen, giving East Polk a 2-1 win.

GAME 2 – vs Mahnomen-Waubun
FIRST INNING-
Klipping got the start in game 2, but was not as successful. After a strikeout, two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases, and a wild pitch would score the first run of the game to make it 1-0. After another walk, Coach Ben Hanson chose to pull Klipping, and put in Reese Pahlen. Her first pitch became a three-run double by Macy Jasken, giving the Thunderbirds a 4-0 lead which would stick at the end of the inning.
In the home half, back-to-back one out walks by Nelson and Klipping put two on, and an RBI single by Schafer cut the lead to 4-1. A sacrifice fly by Knutson cut the lead down to 4-2, and a groundout would then end the inning.
SECOND INNING-
The Thunderbirds would be retired in order in the second on a strikeout and two popouts.
The Eagles got a leadoff walk in the second inning from Miley Cota, but two popouts and a groundout quickly elimimated any threat.
THIRD INNING-
Two popouts and a groundout retired the Thunderbirds in order for a second consecutive inning in the third.
In the home half of the inning, Nelson led off with a base hit, but Klipping then grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to get two quick outs. After an error put Schafer on, Knutson would ground out to end the inning.
FOURTH INNING-
In the fourth inning, the Thunderbirds got some more out of their bats, as a single followed by a double again by Jasken put the Thunderbirds up 5-2. Then, after a groundout, an RBI single by Jazlyn Olson made it 6-2 Thunderbirds, and that lead would stick into the home half of the inning.
Olson, however, would not be able to keep the lead, as the Eagles stormed back for more runs in the 4th, Breiland led off with a single, and after a groundout, an error scored Breiland to make it 6-3. A single by Kennett and an error would load the bases, and a two-run single by Nelson would cut the lead down to 6-5.After a groundout, a wild pitch tied the game at 6, and another groundout would end the inning.
FIFTH INNING-
The Thunderbirds looked to take the lead back in the fifth, and a walk and base hit with one out would get them started. However, even though they moved up to second and third with two outs, Jasken struck out swinging to end the inning.
In the home half, the Eagles got more offense going. Knutson walked to lead off, and after a strikeout, back-to-back walks loaded the bases for Kennett. A wild pitch scored Knutson to make it 7-6, and Kennett would then groundout out to drive in another run, making it 8-6. Layna Schinder and Shandi Nelson would then drive in back-to-back runs on RBI singles, making it 10-6 Eagles, which would stand at the end of the inning.
SIXTH INNING-
Mahnomen-Waubun got a two-out double from Emily Zima, but the rest of the Thunderbirds went down to end the inning, leaving Zima stranded at second.
The Thunderbirds went with a new pitcher, but that is when the wheels completely fell off for them. Knutson and Breiland walked to start the inning, and after Cota got hit by a pitch, back-to-back wild pitches scored two runs to make it 12-6. Seeger and Kennett would then walk to load the bases, and Schindler would then hit a sacrifice fly to make it 13-6. Nelson was next, and she delivered again, nailing a two-run double to make it 15-6, and Klipping would then put the game on ice, hitting a walkoff single to win the game 16-6 in 6 innings.
Red Lake Falls improves to 19-5 on the season. Mahnomen-Waubun’s season ends with a 12-10 record.
