Representative Deb Kiel (R-Crookston) joined other House Republicans in sending a letter to Governor Walz this week to request that he declare a flood emergency to deal with recent extensive flooding which has caused significant challenges for Minnesota farmers. The letter also requested the administration’s help in working with the federal government to seek a Secretarial disaster designation through the United States Department of Agriculture, and a Presidential disaster declaration. North Dakota Governor Doug Bergum signed a similar executive order earlier this week.
“As a farmer myself, I have seen firsthand how difficult the recent flooding has been in our area, and how important a disaster declaration would be,” said Kiel. “Farmers throughout Northwest Minnesota are facing major problems, and a disaster designation would be a major step towards helping our community move forward.”
An executive order, paired with the federal declarations, would give farmers access to financial assistance as well as assist with emergency road repairs.
