Representative Steve Gander issues statement on the weekends tragic events

Representative Steve Gander (R–East Grand Forks) issued the following statement in response to the recent tragic events involving the families of Representative Melissa and Mark Hortman, and Senator John and Yvette Hoffman:

“I want to extend my heartfelt thoughts and prayers for Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, as well as for Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette. I grieve with my fellow legislators and staff as we process the shock and sadness of this act of violence that has struck so close to home.

Although we spend hours debating issues in the legislature, at times with strong difference of opinion, the solidarity and respect we have for all legislators must never be questioned.

An attack on one of our colleagues or their loved ones is an attack on all of us. It is an attack on every freedom-loving, patriotic American who believes in the power of democracy and public service.

I am deeply grateful to law enforcement and the vigilant members of the community who acted swiftly and decisively to bring the perpetrator into custody. It is my hope that our judicial system can now respond with equal swiftness and certainty.

With God’s help, we will restore stability in the Minnesota Legislature and take clear steps to ensure the safety of all public servants. I urge every Minnesotan to continue participating in the political process—but to do so with respect, civility, and peace. And if you or someone you know is experiencing thoughts of violence or distress, I urge you to seek help.”

Rep. Gander reaffirmed his commitment to public safety and to the shared values that unite Minnesotans. In the face of tragedy, he called for unity, prayer, and renewed strength as the Legislature moves forward.
