Richard A. Nelson – OBIT

Richard A. Nelson, 91, Fertile, MN, passed away early on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.

Richard Allen Nelson was born on December 12, 1932, to Erik and Helen (Hansen) Nelson in Little Falls, MN. Richard moved to Fertile early in his life to haul hay for Bill Peterson. Richard was called into service for his country serving in the United States Army in various locations including Japan.

Upon his discharge, Richard was beckoned back to Fertile to resume trucking. On September 4, 1959, he and Rachel Moulton joined in matrimony, embarking on a remarkable journey that spanned 65 years, during which they lovingly raised eight children.

Richard and his brother, Louie formed their own trucking operation from 1960-1976. After which he took the position of shop manager for Melvin Wang until retirement.  He quickly tired of being idle and went to work at Bauer Honey for many years, working until the day his health forced him to stop.

Richard was an avid bicyclist to the point that a lot of people did not know he even had a driver’s license. He enjoyed hiking, traveling, attending truck shows, and spending time with his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and many friends.

Richard is survived by his wife, Rachel; sons, Jim, Greg, David, and Paul Nelson; daughters, Janice Benoy, Sandie Baune, and Sarah Hollerman; and brother, Louie (Jean) Nelson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Erik and Helen; and son, Wayne Nelson.
