RiverView Mammography earns recertification, reinforcing commitment to early detection

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a timely reminder of the importance of regular mammograms and early detection. RiverView Health’s Diagnostic Imaging Team is ready to help women prioritize their breast health with high-quality mammography services backed by recent accreditation and the latest 3D mammography technology.

RiverView’s mammography program recently earned recertification from the American College of Radiology, which is renewed every three years and focuses on mammography image quality and quality control. The program is also certified through the Mammography Quality Standards Act, administered by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. These certifications help ensure RiverView’s mammography services meet established quality and safety standards.

“Mammograms are the most effective method for early detection of breast cancer,” said Alisa Leas, radiologic technologist and head of RiverView’s mammography program. “Consistent mammogram screenings can significantly reduce breast cancer mortality rate by allowing for earlier intervention and treatment.”

Focus on Comfort, Quality

RiverView offers 3D mammography technology in a suite designed with both image quality and patient comfort in mind.

“We’re thrilled to be able to bring this level of technology to our patients,” said Brianna Iverson, director of Diagnostic Imaging. “Patient comfort and image quality are at the heart of this program. Mammograms can be stressful, and our goal is to make the experience as positive as possible.”

Leas, who has worked at RiverView for more than 14 years, agrees.

“The exam itself only takes a few minutes. Although a mammogram can be intimidating or uncomfortable, it’s essential for breast health and can truly save lives. I try my best to make it a positive experience,” she said.

RiverView’s mammography equipment is designed to help address concerns related to discomfort. Its curved technology better accommodates the natural shape of the breast, distributing pressure more evenly and reducing pinching.

The system also provides faster scans and sharper images, including improved imaging of deeper tissue.

“RiverView’s equipment is the latest and greatest in mammography technology,” Iverson said. “The system allows for faster scans and sharper images, especially of deeper tissue. That means less time in compression for patients and better diagnostic confidence for our providers. It’s truly a win-win.”

Early Detection Saves Lives

According to the American Cancer Society, approximately one in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, with a median diagnosis age of 63. Fortunately, overall breast cancer death rates declined by 44% from 1989 through 2023, thanks to earlier detection and advanced treatments.

Regular mammograms remain one of the most effective tools available for catching breast cancer early—often identifying abnormalities long before a lump or physical symptoms can be felt.

For women at average risk, annual mammograms are generally recommended beginning at age 40. Those with a personal history of breast cancer, dense breasts, specific genetic mutations, or other high- risk factors may require an alternative screening schedule. Women should talk to their primary care provider about the screening schedule that is right for them.

A referral is not necessary to schedule a mammogram at RiverView. To make an appointment, call the Diagnostic Imaging Department at 218-281-9428.
