RLF SOFTBALL COMBACK FALLS SHORT, BGMR WINS 5-4 IN SECTION 8A SEMI-FINAL

The #2 seed Red Lake Falls Lafayette Eagle Softball team’s seventh-inning rally fell short, as they would lose to the #1 seed Badger/Greenbush-Middle River Gators 5-4 in the Section 8A semi-final played in Greenbush on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.

FIRST INNING
Badger-Greenbush-Middle River’s Kinsley Hanson would start the game by getting out of a two-out jam with runners on first and second with a groundout to the second baseman to keep the Eagles scoreless in the first. The Gators would come out in the bottom of the inning with a two-out rally led by Hanson hitting a triple down the right field line. Hanson would score on an RBI double by Cassie Dahl. Kylie Klipping would get a strikeout to end the inning with BGMR up 1-0.

SECOND INNING
The Eagles’ early woes at the plate would continue going down in order 1-2-3 in the top of the second. The Gators would lead off with a Quinn Vacura double and would advance to third on a passed ball. Vacura would come around to score on an RBI sacrifice bunt by McKenzie Dahl, and the inning would end with BGMR up 2-0.

THIRD INNING
Red Lake Falls would get their first runner in scoring position thanks to a leadoff double by Jayden Breiland. But the Eagles would fail to get a run across, leaving Breiland stranded at third. The Gators would continue their consistent scoring by getting another run on the scoreboard. Jaci Hanson would reach on a walk and advance all the way to third on a pickoff attempt by the catcher down to first base. Followed up with a sacrifice fly to left field by Quinn Vacura would make it 3-0 after three innings of play.

FOURTH INNING
Quinnlyn Kenfield’s single started off a promising inning with a single to left field and would advance to second on a bobbled ball by the left fielder. Kenfield would make it to third on a passed ball before Gretchen Cota would reach on a walk. Kali Knutson’s flyout to right field wasn’t deep enough, as Jordan Lee would gun down a tagging Kenfield at home plate. Cota was then caught trying to take third base after tagging to second base. Catcher Cassie Dahl would throw down to third and complete a triple play to take away all of Red Lake Falls’ momentum to keep the Eagles scoreless. Kylie Klipping would bounce back in the bottom of the inning with her first 1-2-3 inning of the game to keep it 3-0 BGMR.

FIFTH INNING
Despite a bad ending to the previous inning, Red Lake Falls would put it behind them, scoring their first run of the game. Lila Lanctot would reach on an error by the shortstop and would come around to score on Jayden Brieland’s second double of the game, making it a 3-1 lead for the Gators.
BGMR would bounce back, adding two more runs to their lead after a two-run home run to dead center off the bat of Teagan Landsrud. The Gators extended their lead to 5-1 after five innings of play.

SIXTH INNING
Kenfield would once again be a catalyst for Red Lake Falls’ offense, leading off the inning with her third hit of the game. She would advance to second on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt by the catcher. A Gretchen Cota fielder’s choice would advance Kenfield to third. With two outs, Kali Knutson would put a ball in play, and a throwing error would extend the inning, allowing Kenfield to score, making it 5-2 Gators. Klipping would get her second 1-2-3 inning of the game to give the Eagles a chance down by 3 going into the final frame.

SEVENTH INNING
Lena Schindler would pinch hit and reach on a throwing error from the second baseman to reach to lead off the inning. Shandi Nelson would step up with one out and hit a double to left field off the fence to put runners at second and third. Once again, Quinlynn Kenfield would come up big, driving in two runs with a single to bring Red Lake Falls within a 5-4 deficit. Kinsley Hanson would get a weak popup to the second baseman to end the inning and the game with the Gators winning 5-4.

The Red Lake Falls Eagles fall to 17-4 on the season and will face East Polk on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. after rain postponed the loser-out game a day.
The Badger-Greenbush-Middle River Gators improve to 21-1 and will face the winner of the Red Lake Falls and East Polk on Thursday in the Section 8A championship game.
