The Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball team was ice cold from the field, and the Roseau Rams used a pair of runs to pull away and beat Crookston 57-46 in a Section 8AA matchup played in Roseau.
FIRST HALF-
Crookston had a solid start when they jumped out to a 5-0 lead with a nice give-and-go play from Naomi Johnson to Emma Gunderson for a basket. On the next trip down the floor, Crookston’s Isabelle Smith made a three-pointer for a 5-0 lead one minute into the game. Roseau responded on a 12-2 run while taking advantage of the Pirate’s ice-cold shooting. The Ram run was sparked by four straight points from Anya Severson. After a Crookston basket, Roseau scored the next eight points to take a 12-7 lead with 6:46 left in the half.
Crookston’s Chloe Boll grabbed a rebound and went coast-to-coast for a basket to get the Pirates within a 12-9 deficit, but Roseau responded with five straight points for a 17-9 lead. The scoring picked up in the final 2:37 seconds of the half as the Pirates’ Joey Nesseth scored a basket in the paint, only to have the Rams’ Anna Ulvin answer with a basket. Crookston responded with a nice pass from Gunderson to Johnson for a layup. Roseau’s Casey Kendrick scored with 40 seconds left, and it looked like that was going to be the scoring to end the half. With 4.7 seconds left in the half, Crookston inbounded the ball in front of their bench, and the pass went to Chloe Boll, who caught the ball in the front court and leaped in the air to shoot, but instead dumped a pass to Johnson who banked a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded to get the Pirates within a 21-16 deficit going into halftime.
SECOND HALF –
Chloe Boll scored the first points of the second half with a jump shot to bring Crookston within a 21-18 lead. Roseau responded with six straight points from Reagan Kvien and a Brooklyn Hulst three-pointer to cap a 9-0 run to take a 30-18 lead three minutes into the half. The teams would exchange baskets for the next three minutes, with Chloe Boll scoring six points in the stretch. Isabelle Smith made three pointer with 8:15 left in the game to bring the Pirates within a 44-30 deficit. Roseau led 50-34 with six minutes left after a Chloe Boll basket. Even though Crookston outscored Roseau 12-7 margin in the final five minutes, the Rams held on to win 57-46.
Crookston drops to 3-14 on the year and will travel to East Grand Forks on Thursday for another Section 8AA game. Roseau improves to 7-11 on the year.
