The Roseau Rams used a run at the end of the first half and another run early in the second half to build a big lead and held on for a 70-56 victory over the Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball team in a Section 8AA matchup played in Crookston.
Roseau had a strong start with Sophia Olson scoring the first baskets of the game for a 4-0 lead. Crookston responded with five points with a Naomi Johnson basket in the paint and an Isabelle Smith three pointer to take a 5-4 lead.
It was a back-and-forth battle the rest of the half as there was six more lead changes and seven ties. Roseau led 26-22 when Crookston scored six straight points with Chloe Boll scoring four and Johnson adding a basket for a 28-26 lead with two minutes left in the half. Roseau responded with a 9-0 run that was sparked by five points from Reagan Kvien and two points apiece from Olson and Anna Ulvin for a 35-28 lead. Crookston’s Chloe Boll scored the final points of the half with five seconds left and Roseau took a 35-30 lead into halftime.
SECOND HALF –
The momentum Roseau had going into halftime seemed to carry over into the second half as Roseau led 40-35 when they went on an 11-0 run. Brooklyn Hulst got the hot hand with a pair of three-pointers, Anna Ulvin added a three-pointer and Casey Kendrick scored to give the Rams a commanding 51-35 lead with 11:38 left. Crookston’s Smith ended the run with a basket and Chloe Boll followed with two points to bring the Pirates within a 51-39 deficit. Crookston trailed 54-41 when Roseau scored six straight points with Anya Severson taking over with back-to-back baskets after a Kara Ulvin basket for a 60-41 lead with less than six minutes remaining. Roseau built a 66-46 lead before Chloe Boll burried a three-pointer and followed with a basket to bring the Pirates within a 66-51 deficit. The teams exchanged baskets the rest of the game and Roseau held on for a 70-56 victory.
Crookston drops to 2-4 on the year and will be off until December 28 when they take on Big Lake at the Fergus Falls tournament. Roseau improves to 3-4 on the year.
