Roy Edward Hobbie was born on June 13, 1926, the son of Herman and Anna (Renken) Hobbie at Nokomis IL. He was baptized at home on his date of birth and later confirmed his Faith at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, in Nokomis.

Roy enjoyed small town and rural life in Witt, IL, growing up with family, friends, fishing, hunting, and a large bicycle paper route when younger. He graduated from Witt High School in 1944. Entered the US Navy and served as a gunner on SS Westerly Victory during WW2. After his discharge, he attended Illinois College, then became a railroad lineman.

Roy married Jean Upchurch on November 23, 1951. After years of apprenticeship and training, Roy became a Master Electrician. He was employed by Shell Oil Co., Wegman Construction Co., and Southern Illinois University (Edwardsville and Alton campuses). He lost Jean in 1985 and retired in 1988. Roy enjoyed the River Bend area with hiking, fishing, sightseeing, big-band era dancing, and other opportunities. He especially loved to travel the Western United States, first with Jean and later with good friends. He cherished his friends and church family in Faith Lutheran Church, holding positions as trustee and elder. Roy loved his home and remained there until reduced sight and physical mobility caused his move to Minnesota in 2016, first to Montevideo, then Ada.
