Ruth Spielman – Obit

Ruth Spielman, age 98, of Twin Valley, MN, died on Tuesday, September 29, 2020, at the Viking Manor Nursing Home in Ulen.

Ruth Louise, the daughter of Henry and Helen (Specht) Schroeder, was born in Mahnomen County on October 24, 1921. Ruth attended Popple Grove school through 8th grade and was confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mahnomen, MN. On October 14, 1945, Ruth married Lloyd Spielman. Ruth and Lloyd were blessed with four children: James, Louise, Paul, and Mark. They lived on their farmstead until moving to Viking Manor Assisted Living in 2016.

Ruth enjoyed being a farm wife and mother. She raised chickens and sold the eggs. She also spent time milking cows and separating the cream and when the creamery no longer bought the cream, she churned butter and ice cream for her family. Ruth loved to garden, keeping both a vegetable garden and flower garden. Ruth raised most of the family’s food, canning and freezing it for the long Minnesota winters. She also raised many varieties of flowers with gladiolus being her specialty and roses being her favorite. Her flowers would be found on the church altar and as flowers for local weddings. Amongst the many duties Ruth had on the farm and attending her garden, she always made time to bake for her family. She would make a pie nearly every day. Ruth always kept herself busy throughout her life. Her most cherished time spent was with her family and friends. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Ruth was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church until its closing. She served as the Women of the ELCA treasurer for many years. She led circle bible studies and was often a part of the serving group for funerals, fundraising and other activities. Ruth was also a member of the Gideons.

Ruth is survived by her children: James, Louise (James) Stromberg, Paul (Dilene), Mark (Jenifer), and daughter-in-law, Marjorie; 9 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren: and many nieces and nephews. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd; her parents, Henry and Helen; two brothers; and two sisters.

A graveside service will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 4, 2020, at St. Olaf Lutheran Cemetery, Twin Valley, MN.

All are welcome to attend and encouraged to bring a chair. Following all Covid-19 safety protocols, social distancing will be practiced, and all must wear a mask to attend.
