FIRST HALF –
Fosston would score the opening two points of the game on a Carsen Boushee layup, but it would be the only lead they would have, as the Eagles would counter with a 13-0 run to take a 13-2 lead with 10:30 to play in the half. It was Landen Denney with 6 early points inside to go along with free throws from Ethan Arntson and Josiah Sundby, as well as a Breck Bloom three-pointer. The Greyhounds would finally end a seven-minute scoring drought on a free throw from Hudson Boushee, and after another one from Aaron Norland, they trailed 13-4 midway through the half. Fosston would inch closer and closer and even get the lead down to eight points trailing 20-12 with 4:40 to play in the half, but every time they got close Sacred Heart answered. Parker Erickson would score the last five points of the half for the Eagles in the final four minutes and Sacred Heart would take a 25-12 lead into the halftime break. The last layup was on a full-court pass from Josiah Sundby that Parker Erickson caught at the rim and laid in. Sacred Heart was extremely balanced in the first half with six different players scoring and Parker Erickson leading the way with 7 points and
SECOND HALF –
The Greyhounds would get the first points of the second half on a Carsen Boushe layup, but the Eagles would rattle off a 5-0 run on a Josiah Sundby three and Parker Erickson layup to take their largest lead of the game at 30-14. Fosston had a starting lineup of five seniors and they wouldn’t go away easy, rattling off a 10-3 run to cut the deficit back to single digits at 33-24 with 12:30 to play in the game. Sacred Heart’s three-pointer shooting was a big difference in the second half, and after the teams traded a layup each, Ethan Arntson cashed in a three to give the Eagles some more breathing room in front 40-26. Still, though, the Greyhounds wouldn’t go away and would respond with an 8-0 run to make it 40-34 with 7:28 remaining in the game. Highlighting the run were Cullen and Aaron Norland who scored six of the eight points. The Eagles always had an answer, and every time Fosston scored, Sacred Heart would as well. Landen Denney would convert on a layup, and after a Fosston score, Arntson would hit another three to extend the lead to 45-36 with 5:25 to play. Aaron Norland would respond with an and one for Fosston, but Parker Erickson came back and hit a three of his own to make it 48-39. That three would start an 8-0 run and the Eagles would blow the game open late taking a 53-39 lead with just 3:30 to play. The Greyhounds put on a full-court press, but never got the deficit back closer than nine points, and the Eagles would secure a 58-47 win, giving them their second straight Section 8A Title and a trip to the Class A State Tournament.
Sacred Heart moves to 27-4 and will now play Wednesday in the opening round of the Class A State Tournament. They will play at Williams Arena on the campus of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis against #2 seed New Life Academy on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. KROX will carry all of the Sacred Heart State Tournament games on KROX Radio.
Fosston ends their season with a final record of 25-6.
