SAFETY TOWN WRAPS UP A BUSY WEEK OF SAFETY TRAINING

The Crookston Community Education Program hosted its annual Safety Town program at Washington Elementary School, which ran this week. Megan Parenteau and Stacy Olson are co-safety town coordinators, as well as teachers at Washington Elementary School.

The Safety Town program is intended for children who have recently completed Kindergarten, and the program provides comprehensive safety education. Safety topics that were covered were: home safety, boat safety, playground safety, traffic/pedestrian safety, internet safety, and fire safety.

DAILY ACTIVITIES
Each day, Safety Town presented different activities for the children. “The participants were presented with the following safety topics,” said Parenteau. “Bicycle safety, train safety, poison safety, home safety, police car, and uniform, as well as boat safety.”
The children also had hands-on safety training called on the town safety, where they practiced pedestrian safety, along with hand signals/driving safety.

On Wednesday, the participants switched gears and learned about firearm safety. They were presented with safety topics from the Crookston Fire Department, which highlighted their firefighter uniform.

Thursday’s activities brought more safety guidelines to participants. These activities were: ATV safety, sports safety, passenger safety, and 911 awareness.

FINAL DAY OF SAFETY TOWN
Friday, June 9, is the final day of Safety Town, which includes guest speakers and graduation. “The participants will be able to practice their safety skills on the playground,” said Olson. “They will also be receiving an ambulance tour, and they will be presented with summer safety and internet safety by community experts as well.” Following the final activities, a graduation ceremony will be held, and during the graduation ceremony, all 45 participants will receive a safety focus story along with a graduation certificate and a graduation cap. When graduation is completed, a reception will take place. It will include cake and lemonade.

THANK YOU TO ALL OF THE EXPERTS AND SPEAKERS
Parenteau and Olson wanted to give thanks to our many community experts and speakers who have helped to present the information to our participants throughout the week. We would also like to thank our sponsors, which include over 40 businesses and organizations that helped to make our Safety Town possible. Sponsors include Safe Kids Grand Forks, Polk County Public Health, Polk County Sheriff’s Office, and the Crookston Police Department.
