Sister Marguerite Streifel will be included in a series of video clips played during the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions (FDLC) annual convention on October 9-11 in Chicago. The brief interview clips recognize people from across the country who have made contributions to liturgy throughout the organization’s 50-year history.
“I was honored to be asked to share some reflections. I started out in the FDLC about a year into its origin,” Sister Marguerite said. “Working for the diocese for 30 some years with a bishop who loved liturgy and wanted good liturgy, I felt honored to pave the way.”
She discovered her passion for liturgy while stationed at a parish in Mahtomedi, Minnesota near St. Paul through helping implement the use of English in liturgy. She later received master’s degrees in church music and liturgical studies. She became the first Director of the Office of Worship for the Diocese of Crookston in 1977.
“I love the liturgy. I fell in love with the liturgy and I love the people that I do liturgy with,” Sister Marguerite said.
She continues to play the organ for Masses at St. Mary, Euclid; Sts. Peter and Paul, Warren; Holy Trinity, Tabor; St. Francis of Assisi, Fisher, and St. Joseph, Oslo.
Mary Dahl, Director of the Office of Worship, said the FDLC desired to recognize people who made contributions to liturgy and liturgical formation in the past, present and are set to continue doing so in the future.
“We have such a treasure of wisdom and we are building on really solid foundations. It’s not something that we just take for granted,” Dahl said.
The series was created to mark the 50th anniversary of the FDLC. During the three-day convention held at the Sheraton Grand Hotel in Chicago, members will consider the past, present, and future of the organization’s role in liturgy.
The FDLC was initiated by the Bishops’ Committee on the Liturgy in October 1969 to prepare for the first English-language Roman Missal. It remains a national organization of diocesan liturgical commissions and directors of worship appointed or established by their local bishops. Members also include those who support liturgy in parishes, universities or other Catholic institutions.
