SMOKING MATERIALS CAUSE SATURDAY EVENING FIRE IN GRAND FORKS

At approximately 7:42 p.m. last evening, Saturday, October 31, the Grand Forks Fire Department was dispatched to 917 N 3rd St. for a fire on a shed attached to a home.

Upon arrival, the Grand Forks Police Department advised that no flames were visible.  GFFD crews arrived on scene and found that the homeowner had extinguished the flames with some fire extinguishers and a garden hose.  GFFD crews remained on scene, removed all charred material, and checked for any extension further into the structure.  Damage estimates are about 1,000 dollars.  Cause of the fire is improper disposal of smoking material.

GFFD responded with 5 engines, 1 ladder truck and a command vehicle.  2 engines, ladder truck and the command vehicle arrived on scene, all others were canceled.  GFPD and Altru Ambulance were on scene as well.

GFFD wants to remind everyone of proper disposal of smoking materials, the importance of having working fire extinguishers and working smoke detectors.
