Crookston High School senior Reggie Winjum signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at the University of Minnesota Crookston next year.
Winjum is following the footsteps of his sister Halle Winjum, who currently plays for the Golden Eagle Women’s program. Reggie’s father also works at Minnesota Crookston.
Winjum is a three-sport athlete, competing in soccer, basketball, and tennis.
In soccer, Winjum was the goalkeeper for the Pirates, where he had an outstanding season and was named all-conference his junior and senior years. He was named team MVP, defensive MVP, and best leadership at the Pirate banquet this year.
In basketball, Winjum has played varsity since his freshman year and was named all-conference as a sophomore and junior.
In Tennis, he has been playing varsity since he was in seventh grade and finished third place in the Section 8A individual tennis tournament as a junior.
Winjum was the male representative from Crookston High School for the Minnesota State High School League EXCEL award, which is given to juniors who are actively involved in community activities and volunteering.
He was crowned Crookston High School homecoming king this fall.
Winjum is currently undecided, but leaning towards a major in sports management. He is the son of Chris and Leah Winjum.

Section 8A Girls Hockey teams already have 10 games in (3 teams do, 2 have 9) this season. So it is time to take a look at where things stand as they approach the halfway point of the season.
No surprise that Warroad is the top team again. They beat Crookston 7-0 in their only section game so far this year. Warroad plays a tough schedule, and they are only averaging giving up one goal a game!!! They had a big 3-1 win over #3-ranked Breck and are currently ranked #1 in the stat,e and deservedly so. Thief River Falls is having a much-improved season thanks to the cooperation with Red Lake Falls and Kittson! They are 2-0 in section play and have beaten East Grand Forks and Crookston, so they have the second spot at this point in the season.
East Grand Forks is currently 1-0 in section play with a win over Crookston. East Grand Forks is much improved as well this year and they are currently in the third spot as of today.
The fourth spot gets interesting as Crookston and Detroit Lakes both have one win in section play. Both have beaten International Falls. Crookston takes on Detroit Lakes tonight (Thursday), so whoever wins the game will be in the fourth spot with the loser in the fifth spot. International Falls will be the sixth seed, unless something crazy happens in the second half of the season.
There are a lot of big games coming up with Crookston playing East Grand Forks two more times, TRF and EGF play each other, Detroit Lakes takes on TRF and EGF also, so the seeding is still up in the air with a lot of important section games remaining.
Section 8A Girls Hockey Standings

| Warroad | 1-0-0 | 7-2-0 | 3 |

The Section 8AA Girls’ Basketball season is well underway, with most teams having a few to some having a handful of games in already.
Here is what we know so far. Menahga is good….check that, they are very good again this year and have a tougher schedule and they have been doing everything they can to prepare for a big section tournament run. They have outstanding defense, solid offense and they are well-coached. They are going to be tough.
Frazee is having a great start to the season going 4-0 and 3-0 in section play. They are putting up nearly 80 points per game and have been impressive in their games so far this season. They will be tough.
East Grand Forks is off to a pretty good start so far this season as they won both of their gams. Both were section games with lopsided wins over Barnesville and Thief River Falls.
Other teams that have had good starts are Perham, Roseau, Wadena-Deer Creek. and Pelican Rapids are all solid teams. Pelican Rapids girls basketball has to be thinking what the heck. The Boys are in Class A and are currently ranked as a top team, deservedly so in Class A, but the Girls remain in Class AA. That is the MSHSL in a nutshell. The section is wide-open and it is too early yet to make any crazy predictions.

The Section 8A GIrls Basketball teams have three to five games under their belts already this season and it has gone as we expected!
The Section 8A – West is loaded with some very good teams again this year. You have five teams that have seperated themselves right away.
The two top teams are Sacred Heart and Warren-Alvarado-Oslo at the top with RLCC, KCC, and Fertile-Beltrami right behind. Stephen-Argyle took one on the chin in their season opener when they faced WAO, but bounced back and lost a close one to Sacred Heart so they are a team that has the talent and will be a dangerous team when playoffs roll around.
WAO has only allowed 18 points per game in their first three games this season! The Pony defense is lights out and the old saying of in your shorts defense is what they do. They are ball hawks and put unrelenting pressure on you the entire game. They are fun to watch because they work so hard. Markelle Pederson is the real deal and works so hard on both ends of the floor and Macey Boe has gotten even stronger and is one of the best Sophomores in the section.
Sacred Heart is a different team as they have outstanding posts with Lexi Lawrence (maybe the best player in the section) at six feet tall and super athletic and it is scary to say, but even stronger this year for her junior year. You mix a defensive ball-hawk like Finley Horken who is also an outstanding all-around player and athlete. Chip in the others that know how to win and they are loaded again this season.
Kittson County Central has had a great start to the season and have a lot of talent returning with the likes of Kaydence White, who creates matchup problems with almost every team the Bearcats play. She is so athletic and can single-handedly take over a game.
RLCC is a team that is loaded with a lot of talented players and they have taken some lumps over the past few years, but their hardwork is paying off as they get older.
Fertile-Beltrami is solid again. The Falcons never have a shortage of talent, athleticism and are another team that will be in the mix.
Section 8A – West Standings
| Team | Section | Overall | QRF Value | QRF Rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Warren-Alvarado-Oslo | 2-0 | 3-0 | 44.7 | 8 |
| Red Lake County Central | 3-0 | 4-0 | 43.8 | 10 |
| Kittson County Central | 3-0 | 4-0 | 43.6 | 11 |
| Sacred Heart | 3-0 | 5-0 | 42.7 | 16 |
| Fertile-Beltrami | 3-1 | 3-1 | 37.0 | 33 |
| Stephen-Argyle | 1-2 | 1-2 | 20.9 | 69 |
| Goodridge/Grygla | 2-2 | 2-3 | 18.9 | 79 |
| BGMR | 0-3 | 1-3 | 18.3 | 83 |
| Climax/Fisher | 1-1 | 1-4 | 16.1 | 88 |
| Northern Freeze | 0-2 | 0-2 | 7.1 | 109 |
The Section 8A East is a one-team race with Kelliher/Northome at the top and nobody else is close. The Mustangs are coming off an outstanding season last year and have picked up where they left off as they are averaging 82 points per game and are currently ranked in the top five in the state. They are very good and are one of the top teams in the section.
The rest of the teams are fighting for second place. Fosston has been impressive so far without their top player due to injury. It is early and a lot of season remaining, but it will be interesting who will rise towards the top as the season continues.
Section 8A – East Standings
| Team | Section | Overall | QRF Value | QRF Rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kelliher/Northome | 1-0 | 4-0 | 46.5 | 7 |
| Fosston | 2-1 | 3-2 | 24.7 | 61 |
| Blackduck | 1-1 | 2-2 | 21.7 | 67 |
| Win-E-Mac | 1-3 | 2-3 | 20.1 | 72 |
| Bagley | 0-2 | 1-2 | 14.3 | 94 |
| Clearbrook-Gonvick | 1-1 | 1-2 | 12.2 | 103 |
| Mahnomen/Waubun | 0-2 | 0-4 | 5.7 | 112 |

The Minnesota State High School League Board of Directors met last week and here is some notes from the meeting. A few things caught my eye with the Class Competition Policy and taking enrollment average and getting the Section placement out four months earlier is a huge plus! Also, it is good to see they are going to be cracking down on the baseball bench decorum of the players. Most teams around here are good, but the level of swearing of kids that I hear the last several years is crazy and disheartening. Hopefully Legion Baseball will take this step too.
Action Items
9A: Class Competition Policy (Bylaw 400 Series)
Approved a modification of the Class Competition Policy that includes the introduction and definition of two new terms: Annual MSHSL Enrollment and Classification MSHSL Enrollment. With this approval, the calculation of the Classification MSHSL Enrollment is based on the average of two consecutive Annual MSHSL Enrollments. Using the enrollment average permits the League to complete the Competitive Section Placement process up to four months earlier every two years. The policy will be implemented beginning in the 2026-2027 school year.
9B: Board Policy: Bylaws 410.00 Sanctions and 411.00 Scheduling of Contests
Approved a policy that creates an exception to Bylaws 410 and 411 to provide opportunities for three Member Schools: State Academy for the Blind, State Academy for the Deaf and Metro Deaf School to compete within an interstate conference of similar schools.
9C: Minnesota Paid Leave Act: MSHSL Policy
Approved the addition of the Minnesota Paid Leave Act policy and guidelines to the MSHSL Employee Handbook. The passage of the Minnesota Paid Leave Act requires all employers to make declarations for their employees. In recent work by the Executive Committee, it approved the split of premium costs between the League and employees and approved the opportunity for employees to supplement their paid leaves with the appropriate MSHSL leave options to match their current wages.
Discussion Items
10A: 2027-2028 and 2028-2029 Classification and Competitive Section Placement Process and Timeline
League Staff shared a draft of a timeline for the Classification and Competitive Section Placement Process that is scheduled for the 2026-2027 school year. Key times for Member Schools in the process are Early September as a deadline for submission of opt ups for any team co-ops in sports or activities, per board policy; completed applications for new co-ops or dissolutions of existing co-ops to be placed. Early October is the tentative deadline for filing an appeal for lower classification based on board policy.
10B: Enrollment and Eligibility and Enrollment Ad Hoc Committee
League Staff shared a draft of the potential policy created by the Ad Hoc Committee. The committee, with input from the League’s Board of Directors, has developed a strong consensus as to the eligibility of students who are enrolled in an ISD online school. Board members have spoken in support of students having academic connection to their school of participation in nearly all scenarios to maintain one of the foundational pieces of education-based athletics.
10C: MSHSL SMAC Recommended Heat Policy
League Staff shared updated information and a recommendation from the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee to add language relating to acclimatization and heat illness training for all outdoor activities and coaches. Potential educational pieces were also shared.
10D: Fall Activity Advisory Proposal: Boys and Girls Soccer
League Staff shared information on a Fall Activities Advisory Proposal to seed the Boys and Girls Soccer State Tournaments, Nos. 1-8. Currently, seeding identifies Nos. 1-5 and places the other three teams by random draw. If approved as an Action Item in February, it will be enacted for the 2026 season.
10E: Baseball Minnesota Rule Modification: Bench Decorum
League Staff shared the concerns of Baseball coaches and officials who have identified challenges with bench decorum, actions and unsporting behaviors. A new rule proposed would include warnings (verbal and written), and if negative behaviors persist, ejection.
10F: Representative Assembly Proposals
League Member School administrators provided proposed amendments for three bylaws. These proposed amendments will be circulated to the League’s sixteen regions to vote on whether they should advance to the representative assembly.
- Bylaw 105: Grade Level Eligibility (Non-continuation Schools)
This proposal would indicate that any students in grades 7 and 8, who attend a non-continuation school (K-8 school not affiliated with a specific high school), to be eligible for participation at their resident public school. Currently non-continuation schools are able to create agreements with the high school of their choosing in which their students are eligible for participation in each sport.
- Bylaw 307: Undue Influence on Students
The proposed amendment to this bylaw brings attention to limiting the participation expectations that a coach in a school program can have for students outside the approved season. It also updates the responsibilities of the Member School in this area.
- Bylaw 308: Undue Solicitation of a Student
The proposed amendment focuses on limiting the solicitation or recruitment of students based on their activity participation and skill and includes financial penalties beyond the current suspensions, etc.
Committee Reports
11A: Eligibility Committee
The Board of Directors approved the Eligibility Report as presented which indicates that the number of transfers is very similar to the past few years.

JOKES

An angry wife to her husband on phone: “Where the hell are you?”
Husband: “Darling, you remember that jewelery shop where you saw the diamond necklace and totally fell in love with it, and I didn’t have money that time, and I said ‘Baby it’ll be yours one day’?”
Wife, with a smile and blushing: “Yeah I remember that my love!”
Husband: “I’m in the bar next to that shop.”
— —
Bob was in trouble. He forgot his wedding anniversary. His wife was really angry. She told him “Tomorrow morning, I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in 6 seconds AND IT BETTER BE THERE!” The next morning he got up early and left for work. When his wife woke up, she looked out the window and sure enough there was a box gift-wrapped in the middle of the driveway. Confused, the wife put on her robe and ran out to the driveway, brought the box back in the house. She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale. Bob has been missing since Friday.
— —
A man is in bed with his wife when there is a knock at the door. He rolls over and looks at his clock, and it’s 3:30 in the morning. “I’m not getting out of bed at this time,” he thinks, and rolls over.
Then a louder knock follows. “Aren’t you going to answer that?” says his wife. So he drags himself out of bed and goes downstairs. He opens the door and there is a man standing on the porch. It didn’t take the homeowner long to realize the man was drunk.
“Hi there,” slurs the stranger. “Can you give me a push??”
“No, get lost! It’s half past three. I was in bed,” says the man and he slams the door. He goes back up to bed and tells his wife what happened and she says, “That wasn’t very nice of you. Remember that night we broke down in the pouring rain on the way to pick the kids up from the babysitter and you had to knock on that man’s house to get us started again? What would have happened if he’d told us to get lost?”
“But the guy was drunk,” says the husband. “It doesn’t matter,” says the wife. “He needs our help and it would be the Christian thing to help him.”
So the husband gets out of bed again, gets dressed, and goes downstairs. He opens the front door, and not being able to see the stranger anywhere he shouts, “Hey, do you still want a push?” And he hears a voice cry out, “Yeah, please.” So, still being unable to see the stranger he shouts, “Where are you?”
And the drunk replies, “Over here, on the swing.”
