SPORTS FEEVER – March 13, 2025

SPORTS FEEVER by Chris Fee of KROX Radio – chrisjfee@yahoo.com

I apologize for last week’s column not posting. I was in Washington D.C. for meetings and KROX won the National Association of Broadcasters Crystal Radio Award, the highest honor in radio! I was in meetings all day Tuesday, and on Capitol Hill all day Wednesday and flew home Thursday morning. I didn’t realize the column wasn’t posted until Saturday. Here go, back to the regularly scheduled Sports Feever column.

The Section 8A Girls Basketball champion Sacred Heart Eagles will take on Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. You can hear the game on KROX Radio with the RiverView Health pre-game show at 4:30 p.m.

Sacred Heart received the #6 seed and takes on the #3 seed Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s.
Sacred Heart is 24-6 on the year and Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s is 29-2 on the year. Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s tallest player is 5’10 and happens to be the only senior on the team. Their two losses are to Mayer Lutheran and Lester Prairie. Sacred Heart is playing their best basketball of the season and has wpm eight games in a row.

#8 seed Walker-Hackensack-Akeley (25-4) takes on #1 seed Goodhue (24-5) at 11:00 a.m.
#5 Cromwell-Wright (25-4) takes on #4 West Central Area (24-6) at 1:00 p.m.
#7 MACCRAY (23-5) takes on #2 Mayer Lutheran (26-3) play at 3:00 p.m.

The Section 8A Boys Basketball Championship game is set as the Red Lake County Rebels take on the Kittson County Central. Both teams are looking to make their first-ever trip to state!
Red Lake County 28-2 on the year and Kittson Country Central is 22-7.
The teams met twice during the regular season, with Red Lake County winning the first meeting 57-53 on January 21, and KCC winning 63-53 on February 23.
It will be a battle of two outstanding defensive teams. KCC’s Ty Vig (the UND Football commit) is a beast and can shoot the three, drive, and dominate in the paint. Red Lake County has Connor Duden and Owen Chervestad leading the way, along with Will Gieseke. The first two games were great battles, and I only expect the third meeting will be a great game.  Who is going to win?  It is a toss-up and you can listen to the game on KROX Radio or watch it on KROX TV.

The Section 8AA Boys Basketball Championship game is set with two teams I predicted to make the championship at the start.  Barnesville, who should have been the top seed, and Pelican Rapids (the defending Section champs.
Barnesville is 22-6 on the year, and Pelican Rapids is 23-6 on the year.
The teams played twice during the regular season and Barnesville beat Pelican Rapids 47-41 on January 10 and Barnesville won 78-72 on February 21.
The old saying is….it is hard to beat a team three times in a season, but I am going with Barnesville winning this game.

Crookston High School grad Matt Lessard‘s son Ian finished 4th place at the State Wrestling tournament at 121 pounds in AAA. Looks like he takes after his old man, maybe a little bit better!!!

What a state wrestling tournament weekend for Fosston/Bagley assistant coach, Clay Thompson. Clay had two sons and two nephews competing in the state individual tournament.

University of Minnesota Director of Athletics Mark Coyle has announced that the University has parted ways with men’s basketball coach Ben Johnson.

Statement from Mark Coyle

“I met with Ben in-person early this morning when the team returned to Minneapolis from the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament and informed him that we were making a change in leadership. I thanked him for his dedication and for guiding the program, one he cares deeply about, for the last four years. Ben is a terrific person, and we wish him well.

“These decisions are difficult and are made after careful consideration and evaluation. The expectation for our program is to compete for championships, and unfortunately, we have not done that in the last four years.

“This is an extremely desirable job in one of the best conferences and cities in the nation, and we fully expect to compete at the highest level on and off the court. We provide a world-class experience for our student-athletes, have one of the best practice facilities in the nation and play games in a historic venue. We offer everything that is needed to be successful, and we will immediately begin a nationwide search for our next men’s basketball coach.”

An elderly woman walked into the local country church. The friendly usher greeted her at the door and helped her up the flight of steps. “Where would you like to sit?” he asked politely. “The front row please.” she answered. “You really don’t want to do that”, the usher said. “The pastor is really boring.” “Do you happen to know who I am?” the woman inquired.”No.” he said. “I’m the pastor’s mother,” she replied indignantly. “Do you know who I am?” he asked. “No.” she said. “Good,” he answered.

n 85-year-old man was requested by his doctor for a sperm count as part of his physical exam. The doctor gave the man a jar and said, “Take this jar home and bring back a semen sample tomorrow.”

The next day the 85-year-old man reappeared at the doctor’s office and gave him the jar, which was as clean and empty as on the previous day. The doctor asked, what happened and the man explained. “Well, doc, it’s like this–first I tried with my right hand, but nothing. Then I tried with my left hand, but still nothing. Then I asked my wife for help. She tried with her right hand, then with her left, still nothing. She tried with her mouth, first with the teeth in, then with her teeth out, still nothing. We even called up Arleen, the lady next door and she tried too, first with both hands, then an armpit, and she even tried squeezin’ it between her knees, but still nothing.”

The doctor was shocked! “You asked your neighbor?” The old man replied, “

Yep, none of us could get the jar open.”

An old man was sitting on a bench in the mall when a young man with spiked hair came over and sat down beside him. The boy’s hair was yellow, green, orange, and purple. He had black makeup around his eyes. The old man just stared at him.

Finally the boy said, “what’s the matter, old man, haven’t you ever done anything wild in your life?”

The old man thought for a while and answered, “well yes actually, I have, I once got drunk and had sex with a parrot. I was just wondering if you were my son.”
