The Section 8A Softball tournament wraps up today (Thursday) with a familiar matchup. Red Lake Falls takes on BGMR. Red Lake Falls beat the Gators in the semi-finals 2-0 and you can expect the game at 4:00 p.m. today will be more of the same. If Red Lake Falls wins, they advance to the State tournament in Mankato on Tuesday. If BGMR wins, there will be a true championship game right after.

I am predicting a RLF 5-0 victory and they will go back to state.

This years MSHSL State Softball tournament will be June 2, 3, and 4, with the Championships being played on June 5.

The first round games will be played on Tuesday, June 2 at 5:30 p.m. at Mankato’s Caswell Park.  If you win the first round, the semi-finals are on June 3 at 4:30 p.m. and the Championship is on June 5 at 6:30 p.m. at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium.

If you lose the first round, you play at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3 at Caswell Park.
3rd place is on Thursday, June 4 at 1:30 p.m. at Caswell Park.
Consolation Championship is on June 4 at 11:30 AM at Caswell Park.

The Section 8AA Softball tournament is down to the final three teams. Roseau stumbled earlier in the playoffs, but have looked good since. WDC had a big win to get to the semi-finals, but DGF seems like they might be a little too much right now. I am predicting a Roseau vs DGF championship game.

THURSDAY – May 28 (at Neutral Field)
3:00 PM – Losers bracket game – Roseau vs Wadena-Deer Creek
5:00 PM – Championship – DGF vs Roseau/WDC winner

FRIDAY – MAY 29 (at Neutral Field)
10:00 AM – True championship if needed

After a standout couple of seasons in Fargo-Moorhead, Wadena native and 2025 American Association Pitcher of the Year Jake Dykhoff is moving on to affiliated ball.

The RedHawks transferred Dykhoff’s contract to the Baltimore Orioles organization Sunday.

Last summer, Dykhoff helped lead the best pitching staff in the American Association. His 1.63 ERA was the best in the AAPB by more than a run and bested the previous RedHawks single season record of 1.84 set by Casey Horrelbeke in 2010.

He is the only qualified RedHawks pitcher with an ERA under two since the team joined the American Association in 2011.

The former Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle went 11-4 with 81 strikeouts over 27 appearances (10 starts) last season. He was named the American Association’s best starter with a spot on the league’s Postseason All-Star Team.

Dykhoff made one start in 2026 for the RedHawks. He tossed six innings on May 16 against the Cleburne Railroaders, striking out 11.

Since making his debut in 2023, Dykhoff has compiled an overall record of 21-11 in 84 appearances (25 starts). Dykhoff struck out 212 batters over 227.1 innings of work, recording an ERA of 2.97.

Dykhoff is the 15th player since 2020 to be transferred to an MLB Organization, and the 94th overall in team history.

The University of Minnesota Crookston soccer program will host an ID Camp August 16 for students entering grades nine through college seniors. The campers will get a chance to experience life as a student-athlete at the University of Minnesota Crookston.

The campers will be instructed by Minnesota Crookston Soccer Head Coach Danny Burstein and Assistant Coach Breezie Davis. They will get a glimpse of campus. They will be led through drills and observed by the coaches at Minnesota Crookston, and nearby universities. The camp will include technical training, possession drills, small-sided and 11v11 games. The campers and their families will get a tour of campus and have Q&A sessions with current Minnesota Crookston players and staff. Lunch is provided. The camp will be held August 16 at the Minnesota Crookston Soccer Field from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Check-in starts at 9:30 a.m. The cost is $130 with camp being $125 plus $5 in fees. T-shirt and lunch are included.

“I am very excited to have prospective student-athletes on campus for our ID Camp,” said Head Coach Danny Burstein. It will be a great opportunity for interested players to interact with the whole team during our preseason. They will get a real feel for what it would be like to come and play soccer at UMC. This camp can be a real tool for both us and recruits to find future Golden Eagles.”
For more information on the camp and to register visit soccer.umcsportscamps.com or reach out to Head Coach Danny Burstein at burstein@umn.edu or 218-281-8420.

JOKES

A man came home from work one day to find his wife sitting on the front porch with her bags packed. He asked her where she was going, and she replied: “I’m going to Las Vegas.”
He questioned her about why she was going, and she told him, “I just found out that I can make $400.00 a night doing what I give you for free.” He pondered that, then went into the house, packed his bags, and returned to the porch with his wife. She said, “And just where do you think you’re going?”
“I’m going too!” he replied.
“Why?” She asked.
“I want to see how you are going to live on $800.00 a year”!

A cowboy rode into town and stopped at a saloon for a drink. Unfortunately, the locals always had a habit of picking on strangers, which he was. When he finished his drink, he found his horse had been stolen.

He goes back into the bar, handily flips his gun into the air, catches it above his head without even looking and fires a shot into the ceiling.

“WHICH ONE OF YOU SIDEWINDERS STOLE MY HORSE?” he yelled with surprising forcefulness. No one answered.

“ALL RIGHT, I’M GONNA HAVE ANOTHER BEER, AND IF MY HOSS AIN’T BACK OUTSIDE BY THE TIME I FINISH, I’M GONNA DO WHAT I DUN IN TEXAS! AND I DON’T LIKE TO HAVE TO DO WHAT I DUN IN TEXAS!”

Some of the locals shifted restlessly. He had another beer, walked outside, and his horse is back! He saddles up and starts to ride out of town. The bartender wanders out of the bar and asks, “Say partner, before you go…what happened in Texas?”

The cowboy turned back and said, “I had to walk home.”

A woman from New York was driving through a remote part of Arizona when her car broke down. An American Indian on horseback came along and offered her a ride to a nearby town. She climbed up behind him on the horse and they rode off.
The ride was uneventful, except that every few minutes the Indian would let out a ‘Ye-e-e-e-h-a-a-a-a’ so loud that it echoed from the surrounding hills.
When they arrived in town, he let her off at the local service station, yelled one final ‘Ye-e-e-e-h-a-a-a-a!’ and rode off.
‘What did you do to get that Indian so excited?’ asked the service-station attendant.
‘Nothing,’ the woman answered. ‘I merely sat behind him on the horse, put my arms around his waist, and held onto the saddle horn so I wouldn’t fall off.’
‘Lady,’ the attendant said, ‘Indians don’t use saddles.

A fire started on some grasslands near a farm. The county fire department was called to put out the fire. The fire was more than the county fire department could handle. Someone suggested that a nearby volunteer bunch be called. Despite some doubt that the volunteer outfit would be of any assistance, the call was made.

The volunteers arrived in a dilapidated old fire truck. They rumbled straight towards the fire, drove right into the middle of the flames, and stopped! The firemen jumped off the truck and frantically started spraying water in all directions. Soon, they had snuffed out the center of the fire, breaking the blaze into two easily controlled parts.

Watching all this, the farmer was so impressed with the volunteer fire department’s work and was so grateful that his farm had been spared that right there on the spot, he presented the volunteers with a check for $1,000. A local news reporter asked the volunteer fire captain what the department planned to do with the funds.

“That ought to be obvious,” he responded, wiping ashes off his coat. “The first thing we’re gonna do is get the brakes fixed on our fire truck!”
