SPORTS FEEVER – November 17, 2022

SPORTS FEEVER – Written by Chris Fee (chrisjfee@yahoo.com)

Now that we have snow I am ready for the Winter Sports Season…..BUTTTTTTTTTTT…..Fall sports are still going for the KROX Sports team as the Fertile-Beltrami Falcon Football team is back at the Minnesota State High School 9-Man Football tournament.  We will talk about that in a bit.   Good luck to all winter sports teams as you start your season!  Stay healthy and remember sports are supposed to be fun so enjoy the ride because you will make memories you will remember for the rest of your life, and most memories won’t be from the games themselves!  The memories will be from a team meal, maybe a big section win, practice, the bus ride, or at a hotel if you have an overnight trip, etc.  Have fun, and be nice to everybody on your team, even if they are better than you and you are jealous.

Enjoy this week’s column where we cover a myriad of topics as we usually do!

— — —

KROX will be back at U.S. Bank Stadium, home of two Taylor Swift concerts in June.  Oh, sorry, I mean the 8-1 Minnesota Vikings.  We will have the Fertile-Beltrami Falcons back at the bank and the State 9-Man semi-finals after they beat Ogilvie 22-6 last Friday in Grand Rapids.
Fertile-Beltrami (11-0) will take on the Section 1 9-Man representative Spring Grove Lions.  Spring Grove is in the far southwest corner of the state and is no stranger to playing at the state tournament.  The Lions were state champs in 2017 and 2018 going 14-0 both years and in one of those years, they beat Stephen-Argyle at state.  In 2011, they lost the state quarterfinal game and finished 11-1 and in 2003 they made it to the state semi-finals and finished 12-1.  This is the program’s fifth trip to state.
Last year the Lions were 3-5 on the year so it has been a big turnaround.  They are led by Junior quarterback Elijah Solum who has broken the school record in passing yardage and passing touchdowns.  He has passed for 2,434 yards and 35 touchdowns.  He is also the teams leading rusher with 1,142 yards!    So Fertile-Beltrami will have to hope to contain him.

Fertile-Beltrami is making a return trip to the state semi-finals so the experience won’t be new to most of the players.  The kids will still be in awe and super excited to be playing in U.S. Bank Stadium and they should be!  This announcer is super excited to be doing another Falcon game in the awesome stadium and more importantly in the state semi-finals.

Here is what we know –

Fertile-Beltrami will have a bigger crowd than Spring Grove.  Not because Spring Grove’s will be small, but because the community and area support for the Falcons has been beyond impressive the last two seasons.  They will have a huge crowd and they make a difference for the players!

Both teams haven’t had a close game this season.  Fertile-Beltrami’s closest game this year was in the state quarter-finals with a 22-6 victory in the snow, ice, and cold.  Spring Grove’s closest game was 33-14.  So if it comes down to the wire, neither team has had a close game and it will be interesting to see what happens.

Fertile-Beltrami has a myriad of weapons on offense.  Isaiah Wright, Derek Sorenson, Brayden Werpy, and the elusive Caiden Swenby at quarterback.  The line has been great on both sides of the ball all season long and the defensive backs have been solid.  Wright leads the team with 168 carries for 1,416 yards and 21 touchdowns, Derek Sorenson has 85 carries for 4,92 yards and 7 touchdowns.  Caiden Swenby is 60 of 85 passing for 990 yards and 13 touchdowns while carrying the ball 52 times for 353 yards and 7 touchdowns.

We are guessing it will be a great game, and it will come down to the team that doesn’t turn the ball over and whoever can have the big plays.

In Class AA – the Barnesville Trojans won their first-round game by beating Moose Lake/Willow River 21-0.  They will play Jackson County Central (12-0) in the state semi-finals.  JCC beat Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted 27-0 in the first round.  They play at 9:00 a.m. on Friday.  The other semi-final game will be Chatfield (11-0) vs. Eden Valley-Watkins (11-0) at 11:30 a.m. on Friday.

In Class AAA – The Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Rebels beat Esko 21-17 to advance to the semi-finals.  Fairmont (10-2) beat St. Croix Lutheran Academy (5-6) 49-7.  The teams will play at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.  The other semi-final is Watertown-Mayer (11-1) vs. New London-Spicer (9-2) on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

Crookston High School graduate Karna (Hanson) Rhodes and her husband Scott’s youngest son, Drake, just recently wrestled his first collegiate match for the #2 ranked Iowa Hawkeyes at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.   Drake was the fourth match of the day, and he won by a 13-4 major decision at 174 pounds.  Drake wrestled at 160 pounds last year, so he was wrestling up a bit, and now he gets to go with the team to West Point, New York, to take on Army on Thursday.

Drake was a three-time Montana State Champ (113, 152, and 160) and was runner-up at 126 his sophomore year.  He was 53-0 as a junior and senior and had a career record of 134-7 at Billings West High School.

Drake is also the grandson of Bruce and Jody Hanson and nephew of Pirate volunteer baseball coach Brock Hanson, Pirate Girls Swim Coach Marley Melbye and Seth Hanson.

The Minnesota Wild has recalled Thief River Falls’ Zane McIntyre after the injury to Marc Andre Fleury.  So don’t be surprised if he is in the net for the Wild in the next couple of games.

Crookston’s Sara “Sunny” Bowman is a veteran and well-respected volleyball official in northwest Minnesota, and this weekend, she was the head official for the Minnesota State High School League Class AA Championship match between Cannon Falls and Pequot Lakes at the Excel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Bowman became part of history as all four head officials of the Minnesota State Volleyball championship matches were women for the first time in the history of the state volleyball tournament.  The officials were Louise Beaman of St. Paul Park in 1A, Sunny Bowman of Crookston in 2A, Gail Simones of Sartell in 3A, and Robbie Goodmund of Marshall in 4A.

When asked if she gets nervous for the big match, Bowman said she did. “I still get nervous before the first game of the year….so yes, I was very nervous. My stomach was in knots from the time I found out I was scheduled until I stepped out there…..I even forgot to introduce myself to the teams and the coin toss….. but once I was in uniform and walked across the court, I was in my element, and it was just another game,” said Bowman. “I LOVE reffing! It’s super fun for me, and anyone that has seen me, ref, knows that I try to make the game fun for everyone. I’m not the stoic, stuffy, bossy lady on the stand, I’m the smiley, throwing up the peace sign to Em (her daughter), bow in her hair, let’s make this a fun experience lady!”

Bowman has been officiating for over 15 years; this was the sixth year she has been officiating at the state volleyball tournament.  Last year, she was the R2 (down ref) in the Class AA championship match.

Bowman, a Red Lake Falls Lafayette High School graduate, is the Crookston Pirate Softball coach in the spring and is a former University of Minnesota Crookston student-athlete, where she played volleyball and softball.

It is great to see the Mighty Bemidji State Beaver Football team back in the NCAA Regional Football playoffs.  When I was at school at BSU, the teams were terrible.  So bad the Tight Ends Coach, Badminton class supervisor/instructor, and intramural flag football supervisor was recruiting me hard to play tight end.  In his defense, I was benching over 300 pounds and scored four touchdowns in one game with my gazelle-like moves.  I told him I don’t like to block, and he said they would fix that…I responded….”No…I really don’t like to block.  I just like to catch passes.”  He got the hint after that and since then, they have improved every year and now are a perennial top team in the NSIC.  So i will take credit!

The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference will send four teams to the NCAA Super Region Four playoff as the pairings were released by the NCAA Sunday afternoon. Minnesota State Mankato (9-2) and Wayne State (9-2) will meet in the opening round in Mankato, Minnesota. Bemidji State (9-2) will host Winona State (8-3) on the other side of the seven-team bracket with the winner advancing to take on top-seeded Angelo State (11-0) in round two.
It’s the second time in school history that Wayne State and Bemidji State have reached the NCAA Division II playoffs with BSU making it last year and WSC in 2008. This marks the 13th time in program history that Minnesota State has advanced to the NCAA Tournament. This will be the eighth appearance in the NCAA Division II Football Playoffs for Winona State, and first since 2017.

— — —

The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) will have four teams extend their seasons as Wayne State, Concordia-St. Paul, Minnesota Duluth, and St. Cloud State will compete in the NCAA Central Region Tournament. The eight-team region tournament will be held in Wayne, Nebraska on November 18-20. St. Cloud State earned an automatic bid via their NSIC Tournament win, while CSP and UMD, and WSC earned at large bids.
CSP has made it into the NCAA Tournament field in all 20 seasons under head coach Brady Starkey and has won 11 Central Region titles during that span. St. Cloud State is making its third straight, and fourth NCAA postseason appearance since 2004 while it’s Wayne State’s 12th NCAA Tournament bid in the program’s history and first since the 2016 season. UMD is making its 23rd NCAA appearance after making the regional 17 of the last 19 seasons.

First Round – Friday, November 18
#1 seed Wayne State (29-2) vs. #8 seed Harding (Ark.) (30-1)
#2 seed Concordia-St. Paul (26-5) vs. #7 seed Nebraska-Kearney (28-5)
#3 seed Minnesota Duluth (26-4) vs. #6 Washburn (24-7)
#4 seed Northwest Missouri State (24-6) vs. #5 St. Cloud State (26-5)

Semi-Finals – Saturday, November 19
Championship Match – Sunday, November 20

JOKES

When a group of tourists visited a crocodile farm, the owner of the place launched a daring proposal;
-Whoever dares to jump, swim to shore and survive, I will give 1 million dollars.
Nobody dared to move, suddenly a man jumped into the water and desperately swam towards the shore while he was chased by all the crocodiles.
With great luck he arrived, taking the admiration of everyone in the place, then the owner announced;
-We have a brave winner.
After collecting their reward, the couple returned to the hotel, upon arrival, the manager told him; he was very brave to jump, then the man said;
-I didn’t jump, someone pushed me!
His wife smiled …
Moral: “Behind every successful man, there is a woman who pushes him.”
— — —

A man lies on his deathbed, surrounded by his family: a weeping wife and four children. Three of the children are tall, good-looking and athletic; but the fourth and youngest is an ugly runt.

“Darling wife,” the husband whispers, “assure me that the youngest child really is mine. I want to know the truth before I die, I will forgive you if-”

The wife gently interrupts him. “Yes, my dearest, absolutely, no question, I swear on my mother’s grave that you are his father.”

The man then dies, happy. The wife mutters under her breath: “Thank God he didn’t ask about the other three.”

— —

A guy goes to the supermarket and notices an attractive woman waving at him.
She says hello. He’s rather taken a back because he can’t place where he knows her. So he says, “Do you know me?”
To which she replies, “I think you’re the father of one of my kids.”
Now his mind travels back to the only time he has ever been unfaithful to his wife, and he says, “Oh, are you the stripper from my bachelor party that I did on the pool table with all my buddies watching while your partner whipped me with wet celery?”
The woman looks sternly into his eyes and says very calmly, “No, I’m your son’s teacher.”
