SPORTS FEEVER – November 4, 2021

Last week I led off by talking about getting help with my anxiety and have had a lot of people reach out to me and thank me for doing it.  My hope is if I can help one person get help sooner than I waited, it would be great.   Life has been great in the month since with very little anxiety and basically none the last couple of weeks.  I had one teacher mention they would like me to talk to the teams and even classes and I wouldn’t have a problem with that.  If you want to talk about it, email me at chrisjfee@yahoo.com or call me at 218-280-4021.  Life has been so much better since getting some help so don’t delay and talk to your doctor asap.

My football championship predictions were on the money except for two.  My picks from last week are below –

Section 6 9-man – Fertile-Beltrami vs Norman County East/UH
Section 8 9-man – Badger-Greenbush-Middle River vs Kittson County Central
Section 8A – Polk County West (Mahnomen-Waubun) vs Ada-Borup-West
Section 8AA – Barnesville vs Pelican Rapids
Section 8AAA – DGF vs Perham (Fergus Falls)

My predictions on the winners of the games are below –
Section 6 9-man – Fertile-Beltrami had a hard-fought win in the semi-finals over Clearbrook-Gonvick and that was probably a good thing for a team that hadn’t had a close game all season long.  Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal had an exciting win over Nevis in the semi-finals.
The two teams met during the regular season and Fertile-Beltrami beat NCE/UH 34-12 on October 8 and I am thinking it will be the same result with Fertile-Beltrami winning the Section 6-9 man championship, but it will be a much closer game!

Section 8 9-man – BGMR used a hail mary in the final seconds of the game to beat Goodridge-Grygla and they are hoping to use that magic to win their first section 8 9-man championship (I am not 100 percent sure, but I believe it would be). The Gators lost their first two games (to Nevis and Goodridge-Grgyla) and since then they have won eight games in a row including a 26-24 victory over Kittson County Central on October 14.  KCC is loaded with solid athletes and this will be a great matchup.  You can expect another great game with this one too close to call, but I would go with KCC to win by less than six points.

Section 8A – Surprise, surprise….Mahnomen-Waubun is back in the championship game.  They man-handled Polk County West on the offensive and defensive line and it was a sight to see.  Having Will Starkey back in the lineup is also a game-changer for the Thunderbirds.  Mahnomen-Waubun is big, strong, athletic, hit hard, and defensively they are outstanding.  The only thing that might be a little suspect is their offense, especially the passing game.  Ada-Borup-West is 8-1 on the year with their only loss to Pine River-Backus on October 8.  One of those eight wins was a 33-12 over Mahnomen-Waubun on September 24.  I am guessing this will be a much better game and going with Mahnomen-Waubun to win the game, even though Ada-Borup-West might have the advantage on the turf.

Section 8AA – Surprise, surprise…..The Barnesville Trojans are back in the championship game.  This time they will take on the Pelican Rapids Vikings.  Barnesville was the favorite from the start of the season, but the one thing that impresses me the most is the fact that Pelican Rapids is in the football championship game while also making it to the 8A boys soccer championship game.  The only other school in Section 8AA football that has boys soccer is Crookston, so what Pelican Rapids has accomplished is pretty impressive!!
Barnesville and Pelican Rapids met during the regular season and Barnesville won 28-14 back on September 17 in Barnesville.  I didn’t get a chance to see Pelican Rapids play this year because Crookston didn’t play them, but I am guessing the turf won’t be an advantage for either team with the athletes both teams have.
I am going to pick an upset here, partially because it would be fun to see somebody else win for a change, but Pelican Rapids is my pick to win the championship.

Section 8AAA – Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton will take on Fergus Falls in the championship game.  DGF was 8-1 on the year with a first-round bye and Fergus Falls was 8-2.  DGF has the fourth-best QRF in the state in Class AAA so they have had a decent schedule with their only loss to Detroit Lakes in the final game of the regular season.  DGF beat Fergus Falls 13-7 on October 15 and you can expect another close game.  Fergus Falls has been a tough team to figure out so I am going to go with DGF to win the game in another close one.

In Volleyball my predictions were –
8A – Ada-Borup-West and BGMR so I was off one – with Kittson County Central taking on BGMR.  This one is too close to call, but I hope whoever loses the section football championship game in 8 9-man wins the volleyball match so both schools can have a state trip!
8AA – Barnesville vs TRF (The semi-finals are tonight, but I am still sticking to my guns)  TRF will beat Menagha 3-1 and Barnesville will win 3-1 and in the championship on Saturday?  I am going Barnesville 3-1.

Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) was picked to win the conference, finishing with 222 points, while Wayne State College was picked second and Minnesota State was chosen to finish third in the overall standings. MSUM was tabbed as the unanimous favorite in the North half, garnering all seven first-place votes, while the Huskies of St. Cloud State were picked second.

The University of Minnesota Crookston women’s basketball team was picked to finish tied for 15th in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Preseason Coaches’ Poll released Thursday, October 28 by the conference office. The Golden Eagles were also slotted in a tie for seventh in the NSIC North.

Minnesota Crookston has an experienced team back for the 2021-22 season. The Golden Eagles are looking to build on a 3-13 (3-11 NSIC) mark during a shortened 2020-21 season. UMC returns six players who played more than 15.0 minutes a game last season. Leading the way are seniors Kylie Post and Mary Burke, along with redshirt junior Bren Fox, freshman Jes Mertens, junior Emma Carpenter, and sophomore Haylee Wheeler. The Golden Eagles also return Eden Golliher, Mattea Vetsch, Kylea Praska, and Veronica Schwartz from last season’s team. The Golden Eagles will also look to the help from newcomers Abigail Leach, Abi Fraaza, Alex Page, and Lily Orazem. The Golden Eagles open up the regular-season November 12 against the University of Nebraska Kearney in Maryville, Mo.

“We have a lot of returners that have improved their skill set,” said Head Coach Mike Roysland. “Along with that we have four new players added to our roster that we are excited about. We have added a lot of length to our roster. This year’s team will have more depth and I feel we have improved in a lot of areas. I’m looking forward to seeing what this team can accomplish.”

JOKES

Manure… An interesting fact.

Manure : In the 16th and 17th centuries, everything for export had to be transported by ship. It was also before the invention of commercial fertilizers, so large shipments of manure were quite common.

It was shipped dry, because in dry form it weighed a lot less than when wet, but once water (at sea) hit it, not only did it become heavier, but the process of fermentation began again, of which a by-product is methane gas. As the stuff was stored below decks in bundles you can see what could (and did) happen.  Methane began to build up below decks and the first time someone came below at night with a lantern, BOOOOM!

Several ships were destroyed in this manner before it was determined just what was happening.

After that, the bundles of manure were always stamped with the instruction ‘ Stow high in transit ‘ on them, which meant for the sailors to stow it high enough off the lower decks so that any water that came into the hold would not touch this “volatile” cargo and start the production of methane.

Thus evolved the term ‘ S.H.I.T ‘ , (Stow High In Transit) ,…………. “So it’s really not a swear word” which has come down through the centuries and is in use to this very day.

You probably did not know the true history of this word.

Neither did I

I had always thought it was a golfing term

The first apple..

A woman ran a red traffic light and crashed into a man’s car. Both of their cars are demolished, but amazingly neither of them was hurt.

After they crawled out of their cars, the woman said; “Wow, just look at our cars! There’s nothing left, but fortunately we are unhurt. This must be a sign from God that we should meet and be friends and live together in peace for the rest of our days.”

The man replied, “I agree with you completely. This must be a sign from God!

The woman continued, “And look at this, here’s another miracle. My car is completely demolished, but my bottle of 75-year-old scotch didn’t break. Surely God meant for us to drink this vintage delicacy and celebrate our good fortune.” Then she handed the bottle to the man.

The man nods his head in agreement, opened it, drank half the bottle and then handed it back to the woman. The woman took the bottle, immediately put the cap back on, and handed it back to the man.

The man asks, “Aren’t you having any?”

She replies, “Nah. I think I’ll just wait for the police.”

Many years ago, Adam ate the apple.

Men will never learn!
