There is a good chance the Crookston Pirate Girls Hockey season could be delayed because four of their players are from Mayville and three of them are competing in the North Dakota Class B Region 2 Championship on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. against Thompson.  The winner will go to the state tournament next weekend.  If Mayville makes it to state volleyball, the Crookston vs East Grand Forks girls hockey game will be postponed to a later date.  Crookston has 10 days before their next game so there is some time to work with.  If Mayville doesn’t make it to state, it sounds like the game will be played and if it is, we will have the game on KROX.

Speaking of hockey –

Parenting is never easy and I would like to think my wife and I do a good job of raising our kids to make the right decisions, do the right thing and all that good stuff.  But there isn’t a book, a Youtube how-to video when it comes to certain parenting situations.

Our oldest son, Blake (a senior) came home from open gym on Sunday night and said he wanted to switch from basketball to wrestling.  This is something he has wanted to do for a year or two now and we didn’t let him because he has put all that work into basketball.
He wrestled in his youth and had success, but he loved basketball.  In fourth and fifth grade they had a very good team and winning obviously made it a lot of fun.  Plus, he was big for his age and he was a guard.  He loved basketball in 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade and about his freshman year he enjoyed it but wasn’t loving it.  He became a tweener, not really a guard and not really a post.
He still likes watching basketball, but wasn’t enjoying playing it even though he played about 90 percent of the time (would have been more if he wasn’t in foul trouble half the time). It WASNT a problem with Coach Greg Garmen because Blake likes him and is his office aid sixth hour and enjoys working with Greg.  To be honest, Greg is kind of another father-figure to Blake.  He has helped Blake with so many things and that is part of the reason why he wanted to be an office aid/helper for Greg this school year.  Blake was sick to his stomach all day Monday worrying about “letting down” Greg.

Blake wants to play college football and feels this will get him more prepared for football next fall.   It all comes down to this, Blake (he is 18 now) has to do what makes him happy and it might actually help that basketball program to have kids that are there and are all-in and enjoy being there. He has been through a lot of crap the past year or two and we just want to see him happy.

On the flip-side, I am also happy for Blake because he is so excited that he is going to wrestle and he and a couple of friends will be joining the team.  They are three great kids that work their asses off in the weight room and in everything they do.  Are they going to be good wrestlers?  Who knows, but I know this much, they will work hard and will have Crookston close to filling the line-up every match this season with three kids that could fill Heavyweight, 220 and 195.

Ultimately when it comes to sports you have to let your kid do what they really want to do and guide them towards making the best decision they can.  It is just a game after all, right?   I will still be broadcasting Pirate basketball games and will probably be happier doing it because my kid isn’t picking up another bad foul or taking a bad shot.
I will also look forward to watching some more wrestling.  I usually try to get over to the Big Bear wrestling tourney each year and as many wrestling events as I can….now I will be showing up to a few more.

We will see.  All I know – We only have seven more years of our kids playing high school sports and we are going to enjoy it while it lasts, but I am really looking forward to those seven years being done at the same time.

P.S. – we are also letting the 18 year old kid that wore a visor for his drivers license photo make this decision.   Soooo….we might be terrible parents for letting him do what he wants.  We will see how it works out.

Those of us in the media love to give a local spin to any story and I am going to do that right now.  The Star Tribune and Pioneer Press Metro Volleyball player of the year is Lakeville North’s Elizabeth Juhnke.  The 6’0 senior will be going to the University of South Dakota next year to play volleyball and attend school.  Elizabeth is the sister of Alyssa’s (my oldest daughter) boyfriend, Paul.  Elizabeth was in Crookston this summer and stayed at our place for a night as they were getting ready to head on a trip to Banff with about 8 or 9 people including Alyssa and Paul.  Actually Paul and Elizabeth’s mom played volleyball at Purdue so they obviously follow their mothers footsteps because Paul is playing club Men’s Volleyball at Minnesota Duluth and traveling all over on the weekends.

Elizabeth had 481 kills and 248 digs this season and had 1,513 kills and 1,059 digs in her career and had been recruited by the Gophers and other schools, but wanted to play all four years and chose South Dakota.

Speaking of Volleyball, Crookston High School graduate Allison (Lindsay) Axness is an assistant volleyball coach at Champlin Park and they will be playing in the State Class AAA state volleyball tournament this week.  Champlin Park also has the Miss Volleyball award winner.

—-

It isn’t a big surprise that Crookston’s Paul Bittner is the poster child for the Cleveland Monsters Movember Foundation!

—-

The banquet for the

Crookston Pirate football team has been changed to Sunday, November 18th at 6:00 pm on the Crookston High School.

—-

Crookston’s Ryan Bittner is playing hockey for Wisconsin-Stevens Point (NCAA D-3) and they have had a good start to the season and are 3-0-1 on the year and the Pointers are ranked #1 in the National Poll.
They had seven first place votes and 273 points while #2 ranked Geneseo had 272 points and five first place votes.
St. Norbert is ranked third and Adrian comes in at fourth.

The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Football team will host the University of Mary Marauders on Saturday in a big game to end the regular season.  UMC is 1-9 on the year with a win over Minot State and Mary is 0-10 on the year.  UMC didn’t win a game last year and if they can finish with two wins the season, it would be a big step forward with great crew of underclassmen coming back.  I will take a look at some stats of interest –

Last week stats for Mary –
– The Marauders held #5 Minnesota Duluth scoreless in the first quarter on Saturday. UMD had outscored opponents 111-3 in the opening stanza entering the game
– UMary’s 6-game streak of forcing multiple turnovers in a game ended after only gaining one turnover against the Bulldogs
– On the season the Marauders have forced 19 turnovers, 4th highest mark in the NSIC
– Luke Little caught two passes for 47 yards; he leads the team with 38 catches for 618 yards and two touchdowns
– Ryan Nielsen made a career-high 10 tackles against UMD
– Maxwell Askew broke up three passes and made four tackles against the Bulldogs. He is the team leader in interceptions with two
– Noah Krebs had a sack and seven tackles in the UMD game

Last week stats for UMC –
– Ali Alkhatib is now ranked third all-time in total tackles with 289. He is 37 tackles behind Cecil Brown, Jr. in second place as he enters his final weekend with the Golden Eagles. In addition, Alkhatib has 148 career solo tackles. He needs two solo tackles to move past Neil Austin in third and seven solo tackles to surpass Justin Reed in second. Alkhatib would need 12 solo tackles to move past Brown in first
– Alkhatib needs just four tackles for loss to surpass Jim Mages for the career record at UMC
– The Golden Eagle defense limited Northern State to just 346 yards, their second-lowest total of the 2018 season
– Andy Groebner is off to one of the best starts a freshman receiver has had at Minnesota Crookston since Adam Connette in 2014 Groebner is 55 yards ahead of the pace of Connette as he has 30 catches for 537 yards through the first 10 games of career
– Rod Stewart moved past Carl Aho for second all-time in receiving yards in career last weekend against Northern State
– Stewart now has 1,793 career receiving yards
– He is second behind his former teammate Adam Connette, who posted 2,781 career receiving yards in his four years
– Stewart is tied for third all-time with Carl Aho for career receptions with 135

Top Performer(s)
– Will Cole had an outstanding day with 12 tackles, one tackle for loss, two interceptions, and one pass break-up. He also had a reception on a fake punt for 11 yards and a first down
– Austin Steele notched 10 tackles and a sack against Northern State
– Rod Stewart had four catches for 75 yards against the Wolves

JOKES (Do you have any good jokes – email them to chrisjfee@yahoo.com and I will put them in the feever

A young boy had just gotten his driving permit. He asked his father, who was a minister, if they could discuss the use of the car. His father took him to his study & said to him, “I’ll make a deal with you. You bring your grades up, study your bible a little & get your hair cut, & we’ll talk about it.”
After about a month, the boy came back & again asked his father if they could discuss use of the car. They again went to the father’s study where his father said, “Son, I’ve been real proud of you. You have brought your grades up, you’ve studied your bible diligently, but you didn’t get your hair cut!” The young man waited a moment & replied, “You know Dad, I’ve been thinking about that. You know, Samson had long hair, Moses had long hair, Noah had long hair, & even Jesus had long hair …” To which his father replied, “Yes, & they WALKED every where they went too!”

A blonde and a lawyer are seated next to each other on a flight from LA to NY. The lawyer asks if she would like to play a fun game?
The blonde, tired, just wants to take a nap, politely declines and rolls over to the window to catch a few winks. The lawyer persists and explains that the game is easy and a lot of fun. He explains, I ask you a question, and if you don’t know the answer, you pay me $5.00, and vise versa.
Again, she declines and tries to get some sleep. The lawyer, now agitated, says, “Okay, if you don’t know the answer you pay me $5.00, and, if I don’t know the answer, I will pay you $500.00.”
This catches the blonde’s attention and, figuring there will be no end to this torment unless she plays, agrees to the game.
The lawyer asks the first question. “What’s the distance from the earth to the moon?” The blonde doesn’t say a word, reaches into her purse, pulls out a $5.00 bill and hands it to the lawyer.
Okay says the lawyer, your turn. She asks the lawyer, “What goes up a hill with three legs and comes down with four legs?” The lawyer, puzzled, takes out his laptop computer and searches all his references, no answer. He taps into the air phone with his modem and searches the net and the library of congress, no answer. Frustrated, he sends e-mails to all his friends and coworkers, to no avail.
After an hour, he wakes the blonde, and hands her $500.00. The blonde says, “Thank you,” and turns back to get some more sleep.
The lawyer, who is more than a little miffed, wakes the blonde and asks, “Well, what’s the answer? “Without a word, the blonde reaches into her purse, hands the lawyer $5.00, and goes back to sleep.

A beautiful young girl is about to undergo a minor operation. She’s laid on a trolley bed by a lady in a white dress and brought to the corridor.
Before they enter the room she leaves her behind the theatre door to go in and check whether everything is ready.
A young man wearing a white coat approaches, takes the sheet away and starts examining her naked body. He walks away and talks to another man in a white coat. The second man comes over and does the same examinations.
When a third man starts examining her body so closely, she grows impatient and says: “All these examinations are fine and appreciated, but when are you going to start the operation?”
The man in the white coat shrugged his shoulders: “I have no idea. We’re just painting the corridor.”
