SPORTS FEEVER – September 14, 2023

SPORTS FEEVER by Chris Fee of KROX Radio – chrisjfee@yahoo.com

We are less than a month away from playoffs for soccer and tennis, about a month away from Volleyball, and after Friday football will be a little over a month away.  Hard to believe how fast the fall season is cruising along. Now that sports are in full swing the column will be back to full strength.

I received this t-shirt in the mail from former UMC Men’s Basketball Coach Dan Weisse. Dan is coaching Oshkosh West High School (his alma mater) and loving it.
It was a nice surprise and I had someone say you should see who else will send you a t-shirt!! So I might try. I am like most of you…I love sports t-shirts. If you look at my vacation pictures, I always wear a sports team t-shirt because it ALWAYS strikes up a conversation.

If you want me to sport your teams, schools, etc t-shirt, I would be happy to accept it. I am thinking if I get a bunch, we will give away some kind of cash prize in a random draw. It will go to the program or school athletic department.

I wear an XL if they run normal size or a XXL if the shirt runs small.

It has been a rough start for the Crookston Pirate Football team as they have lost the first two games by a combined 68-14. Crookston hasn’t had close to 200 yards total offense in either game, and the offense is struggling to say the least. It isn’t a shock after losing Ethan Boll and Jack Doda (running back and quarterback). The line has struggled and like the Vikings, without solid line play, it is a struggle.
The defense has been decent, and that is definitely a positive through the first two games.

Crookston has a big game this Friday when they play Frazee at Moorhead High School’s field. The winner of the game is pretty much guaranteeing they won’t have to play Barnesville in the first round of the playoffs.

The Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team has completed over half its season, and they are currently ranked #10 in Class A with Staples-Motley and Thief River Falls also ranked in the top 10. What a competitive section again this year. Crookston is 9-5 in duals and has lost to three ranked teams- Osakis (5-2), Thief River Falls 4-3), and Pequot Lakes (5-2). Crookston also lost to East Grand Forks (4-3), who missed the top 10, and Alexandria.

Pirate Individuals up to this point:
Addie Fee 15-2
Morgan Nelson 12-3
Georgia Sanders 12-5
Isabelle Smith 12-5
Paige Abrahamson 12-5
Emma Gunderson 11-4
Coral Brekken 11-6
Kaylie Clauson 10-6
Calleigh Fanfulik 8-7
Brekken Tull 5-12
Ashlyn Bailey 2-2
Mariah Overgaard 1-0
Logan Brekken 1-1

What will the Pirate team have to do to beat a TRF, Staples-Motley, East Grand Forks, or Perham?
They must play Emma Gunderson, Isabelle Smith, and Brekken Tull at first singles. Gunderson hasn’t played a singles match yet, and in order to be able to play singles, she will have to play there a few times. The three I mentioned can all play at that spot and they will need flexibility in their line-ups come playoff time.
There will be two great semi-final matches, and the championship match will be a dandy.

The First QRF rankings have been released by Minnesota-Scores.net and there isn’t many surprises early on.

SECTION 8A
Section 8A has the usual teams at the top. Fosston, Kittson County Central, Ada-Borup-West, BGMR, Sacred Heart, Lake of the Woods, and Stephen-Argyle. One name that usually isn’t at the top is Blackduck so it is nice to see them off to a 5-1 start. Once again, Section 8A doesn’t have a heavy favorite, and a handful of teams (so far) could win the section.

JOKES

Husband: “Now that we are married, perhaps I might point out a few of your little defects.”

Wife: “Don’t bother, dear. I’m quite aware of them. It was those little defects that prevented me from getting a much better man than you.”

— —

I helped my neighbour this morning and she said to me, “I could marry you.”

I couldn’t believe it. You do something nice for someone and they threaten to ruin your life in return

— —

Two old ladies were outside their nursing home having a smoke, when it started to rain. One of the ladies pulled out a condom, cut off the end, put it over her cigarette, and continued smoking.

Lady 1: What’s that?
Lady 2: A condom.
Lady 1: Where’d you get it?
Lady 2: You can get them at any drugstore.

The next day, the first lady hobbled into the local drugstore and announced to the pharmacist that she wanted to buy a package of condoms.

The guy looked at her kind of strangely (she was, after all, in her 80s), but politely asked what brand she preferred.

“Doesn’t matter,” she replied, “as long as it fits a Camel.”

A man was driving to work when a truck ran a stop sign, hit his car broadside, and knocked him out cold. A Passersby pulled him from the wreckage and revived him.

He began a terrific struggle and had to be tranquilized by the medics. Later, when he had calmed down, they asked him why he had struggled so.

He said, a bit sheepishly, “I remember the impact, then nothing. I woke up on a concrete slab in front of this huge, flashing sign. Turns out somebody was standing in front of the ‘S’ on the ‘Shell’ sign.”
