Stephen-Argyle Boys Basketball pull away to beat Goodridge/Grygla

The Stephen-Argyle Storm Boys’ Basketball team used a 20-2 run in the second half to pull away and beat the Goodridge/Grygla Chargers 70-30 in a Section 8A matinee in Stephen this morning. The game was festive, with many fans wearing Christmas attire, and Santa Claus even delivered the game ball to the officials for the opening tap.

FIRST HALF –
Goodridge/Grygla scored the first basket of the game for a 2-0 lead before Stephen-Argyle settled in and scored six points in a row, with Dylan Widner getting the first basket and Caden Pagnac adding back-to-back baskets for a 6-2 lead over five minutes into the game. Goodridge/Grygla battled back to tie the game at 9. The game was also tied at 11, 13, and 16 with seven minutes in the half. Stephen-Argyle led 20-18 when Owen Widner scored four straight points. After a Charger three-pointer, Raydon Woinarowicz and Owen Widner finished the half with baskets to give the Storm a 28-21 lead at halftime.

SECOND HALF –
Stephen-Argyle picked up the offense in the second half as Dylan Widner got things going with a pair of baskets in the first minutes of the half. After a Charger three-pointer to close their deficit to 32-26, Stephen-Argyle went on an 11-0 run. The run started with Shay Setterholm scoring five points, Anders Thompson added two free throws, and Darby Benitt, and Blaine Smith added baskets for a 43-26 lead. Goodridge/Grygla answered with a 7-2 run with five of the points scored by Shay Jacobson to get within a 45-33 deficit with over eight minutes to go. Stephen-Argyle went on a 20-2 run over the next four minutes, with Pagnac and Setterholm scoring six points apiece, Thompson and Smith added three-pointers, and Jake Carlson added a basket for a 65-35 lead with 3:55 left in the game. Both teams went to the bench in the final minutes, and Stephen-Argyle won the game 70-40.

Stephen-Argyle improves to 2-4 on the year and will be off until they host the Northern Freeze on January 3, 2025. Goodridge/Grgyla drops to 2-3 on the season.
