Stephen-Argyle Volleyball fights hard but falls to #10 Kittson County Central

The Stephen-Argyle Storm Volleyball team gave the Bearcats everything they had, but it wasn’t enough as #10 Kittson County Central took care of the Storm in three sets (25-13, 25-10, 25-16) at Stephen-Argyle Senior High.

FIRST SET
The first set began with a Kaydence White kill. A Signe Svendsen kill made it 2-1 Bearcats. Then, the lead stayed at one until the Bearcats went on a 3-0 run to take a 7-4 lead. The lead then stayed at three until another White kill made it 13-7. The Storm did their best to hang around, with the help of two Isabelle Westman kills, but great serving by Afton Lindgren and a few Storm errors quickly made the score 18-9. Then, a lot more names for the Bearcats in Afton Lindgren, Morgan Turn, and Grace Faken began to take over the front row, and the Bearcats dominated the end of the first set on a 10-4 run, taking the set 25-13.

SECOND SET
At the start of the second set, the teams began with alternating the first four points before the set started to turn into a carbon copy of the first set, with the Bearcats leading 6-3. After taking an 8-4 lead, an Ayla Woinarowicz kill attempted to get the Storm back in it, but in response, the Bearcats went on a 6-0 run with their aggressive offensive attack, taking a 15-6 lead and warranting a Storm timeout. Out of the break, the lead stayed at 9 until a 5-1 run by the Bearcats made it 20-7, causing another timeout. The Bearcat net presence was just too much to bear for the Storm, as a beautiful Kaydence White service ace put the second set away at 25-10, granting the Bearcats a 2-0 set advantage.

THIRD SET
Kicking off the third set was an Isabelle Westman kill. The two teams then alternated points until a Kaydence White block made it 5-3 Bearcats. After a White kill made it 6-3 for the third straight set, the lead stayed at 3-3 until a Annika Adolphson dig propelled a point to make it 8-6. The lead stayed at two until a Lauryn Whitlock kill made it 11-7. Another White block kept the Bearcat lead at 4, and then a Berlyn Strege kill capped off a 4-0 run for the Bearcats, making the score 17-10 and warranting a Storm timeout. A Nora Osowski kill was a good start, but the Bearcats stayed relentless, with great serving by White, making it 20-11, but the Storm then made it 20-14. The lead then stayed at six until the Bearcats were able to put it away with another White kill, taking the set 25-16 and winning the match 3-0. “I asked the girls to just fight as hard as they could, and that’s really what they did” said Smith, “we needed to get a block up to slow the ball down so our defenders can get to the ball, and I think they did a good job. We do it so we try to get some momentum on our side…we had a little goal to get to 15 points in the final set since we hadn’t done that yet, and we did a great job with that.”

Stephen-Argyle now drops to 3-6 on the year, while Kittson County Central is now 10-1 on the year.
