SUPERINTENDENT JEREMY OLSON JOINS KROX FOR FOCUS ON EDUCATION SATURDAY MORNING

Focus on Education this week features Crookston Public Schools Superintendent Jeremy Olson discussing the positive start to the school year including additional preschool opportunities, the first graders moving to Highland School and the new seventh-grade pod system initiated by the teachers at Crookston High School.

Crookston Public Schools has also had exciting news on the enrollment front, according to Olson.  “We’re also excited by some of the things we’re seeing in enrollment,” said Olson.  “We had planned for about 1,108 for this year and the first day of school 1,132.  As of yesterday, we were sitting at 1,140. So, the enrollment numbers are strong, and we’re very encouraged by that.”

Olson also discusses the upcoming referendum in November, including how the ag-to-school tax credit that will be increasing over the next couple of years to 70 percent will impact the tax burden. “The ag to school has come out which means there is a 50 percent tax credit on ag land,” said Olson.  “And that will be moving up to 70 percent.  There are some things in the works to try to mitigate the impact on ag land.  Because we want to make a package that is fair to everyone, that is something that we’ve tried to work hard on trying to make sure we’re looking at all the different options and bringing the best product forward.”

To hear more from Superintendent Jeremy Olson tune in to Focus on Education tomorrow at 8:35 a.m.  Focus on Education airs every Saturday morning during the school year on KROX.
