This is the time of year when many parents of potential Kindergarten students wonder if their children will be ready for Kindergarten. Often many parents are left pondering or even worrying if they have done enough to get their students ready for that all important first day of school. We are continually hearing about the importance of students starting school ready for Kindergarten and the positive impact that a good start can have on the lives of our littlest learners. I wanted to highlight some of these skills along with the many resources that Crookston Public School has to help you prepare your students for Kindergarten.
What skills should a student possess to be Kindergarten ready?
1. Recognize and write the letters in their name.
2. Name a minimum of 13 letters of the alphabet…upper and lower case.
3. Recognize numbers and count objects 0-10.
4. Be able to listen to a story and turn the pages of a book one at a time.
5. Show independence with self-help skills like toileting, washing hands, dressing self, and tying shoes.
6. Be able to get along with others and use words to express their feelings.
If your student is not able to complete the above-mentioned items, do not worry as we are more than capable of working with your student to gain these skills during Kindergarten. Our only goal is to help give our littlest Pirates the very best start possible.
Crookston Public Schools provides a variety of information and resources on child development and early learning. I went through these resources with Denice Oliver who is the Principal of Washington School and was amazed at all the resources that are available for parents as they prepare their students for Kindergarten. We also have contact information on childcare options, resources to use with your kids as well as a calendar full of ideas to help prepare your student for Kindergarten. Washington Elementary School is a one-stop shop on all things early childhood in Crookston and we would welcome you to stop by and see all that we have to offer. We also have several staff available to help answer any questions you may have on Kindergarten readiness. You can access these free resources at Washington Elementary School located at 724 University Ave. in Crookston or by calling Washington School at 218-281-2762.
This is an important time in your child’s life and we want to do everything we can do to help you prepare your child for a great start in Kindergarten. We stand ready to help you in whatever way we can and wish you a wonderful start to the school year!
