EXCESSIVE SPEED, ROAD CONDITIONS CONTRIBUTING FACTORS IN FEBRUARY CRASH THAT KILLED 16-YEAR-OLD IN GRAND FORKS

The investigation of this incident has been completed. Excessive speed and the condition of the roadway were contributing factors to the crash.

UPDATE 3/1/21

The driver of the vehicle involved in this crash is identified as Maison Berry, 16 years old, of Grand Forks, ND. Berry passed away this weekend as a result of the injuries he sustained in the crash.  

ORIGINAL STORY

On Wednesday, February 24 at approximately 12:09 p.m., officers responded to a one-vehicle accident on the 1500 block of Rider Road.  It appears the 2001 Jeep operated by a 16-year-old driver was Northbound on Rider Road, lost control, and impacted with a tree causing significant damage to the driver’s side of the vehicle. 

The driver of the vehicle was taken by ambulance to Altru with life-threatening injuries.   The driver was the only occupant of the vehicle. The Grand Forks Police Department (GFPD) was assisted by the Northeast Regional UAS (Unmanned Aircraft System) team, GFPD CART (Collision Analysis Reconstruction Team), Grand Forks Fire Department, and Altru paramedics.  The accident is still under investigation.
