The 2nd Annual Get Kids Outdoors Summer Fishing event is July 9

The second Annual Get Kids Outdoors, Summer Fishing Event is just around the corner. The event will be held on Wednesday, July 9, and is an all-day event full of fishing, exploration, and fun.

Fred Parnow, who, along with the rest of his family, takes great pride in creating these kinds of experiences for kids in honor and remembrance of their son Adam Parnow. So, what is in store for those who sign up for the annual fishing event? “We are going to fish in the morning at Maple Lake. We are just going to the East access, the boat access over there by the park, and kids will fish for a few hours,” says Parnow. “Then we are going to go over to Rydell National Refuge, where we will have lunch.” The adventure doesn’t stop there. The kids have a full afternoon ahead. “The kids will have the opportunity in the afternoon to go on trail hikes and fieldtrips with the staff out there,” says Parnow. “It will be hands-on in the morning and learning in the afternoon, so it’s going to be a full day of fun for kids.”

The buses will leave the High School at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 9, and return at 4:00 p.m. Parnow says they could use a little help to make this a memorable experience for the kids. “We could use a couple, three more people to volunteer to bring out their boat or pontoon if they are on the lake,” says Parnow. “Right now, we have a few people to drive boat or teach kids as well.” Volunteers will be helping to teach the kids how to bait their hooks, cast, take their fish off the hook, and more.

Of course, depending on the weather, the kids will need to dress accordingly, but other than that, Parnow says they don’t need to bring anything else with them. “We are going to give every kid a fishing rod and a tackle box full of tackle.” Parnow also says they will come home with stories to tell of their day, and that is priceless.

Speaking with Fred Parnow, what they get from hosting these kinds of events is more than they could have ever expected, and that’s why they continue their work. “The gratification for us in all of these activities that we do is just the smiles from the kids, the thank you, the phone calls, and the emails from the kids, the parents, the grandparents, and people from the community,” says Parnow. “That makes it all worthwhile. That tells us we’re doing the right thing.”

Parnow wants folks to know one thing about this particular event: “This is a catch-and-release event. We are not going to clean all the fish,” says Parnow. “We will give them the pictures.” There are about 30 spots total for the trip, so if you want to sign up, you can do so by visiting the Get Kids Outdoors Facebook page or website. If you have questions or don’t have access to sign up online, you can call Parnow at 218-280-6344. The deadline for signing up is July 6. This event is open for boys and girls ages 10-15.
