The first session of the Driver’s Education program is coming to an end this Saturday, March 26, with Highland Elementary School Principal Chris Trostad, but for all of the High School students that are interested in getting their permits before this summer, the next session is beginning soon after on Monday, March 28 at 6:00 p.m. Students interested in taking this session will have to fill out a registration form and turn it in to either Principal Chris Trostad via email at christrostad@isd593.org or can drop it off in the Highland Elementary School office. The deadline to turn in the registration forms to join the course is Friday, March 25. Students must pay a fee of $325 to join the course, which they can do either at the Crookston High School front office, and turn in their receipt on the first day of class, or pay on the first day at the Highland Elementary School. Students must pay the fee by the first day, otherwise, they will not be allowed to take the course.
Students can also sign up for the Summer and Fall sessions, with those registrations being due on Tuesday, May 24, and Friday, July 8, respectively. However, students who wish to take the course this spring must be turning 15 by June 1 if they wish to sign up for the next session; otherwise, they will not be accepted for the course. “Any students interested in getting into Driver’s Ed need to be turning 15 before the date of the deadline on the registration form. They need to be in the class sessions closest to their 15th birthday.” Course Instructor Chris Trostad explained, “All our forms are available in the High School office, or on the High School’s, KROX’s, and the Crookston Time’s websites. Anybody that is interested in registering for the second Spring session, get that registration form in as soon as possible, no later than this Friday, or you can register for Summer or Fall registration as well.” The deadline for their age is specified to be a later date than the deadline of turning in their registration form, so students must plan and choose the best session for them to take the course.
Trostad would also like to remind the High School parents that this course is only for the students of Crookston Public Schools, not adults or students from other school districts. “Driver’s Ed is only available for students enrolled in Crookston Public Schools, so those students are eligible to enroll in our class. We do not offer Driver’s Ed to adults, as there is a Driving School in Grand Folks that does that.” Trostad explained. He also wished to remind parents that the course will have a Supplemental Parent Course and encourages them to participate in it as it will help their children reduce driving hours they will have to log for in the course. “If the parents and the child do not come to a Supplemental Driver’s Ed course, they have to log 50 hours with 15 of those hours have to be at night.” Trostad explained, “But if they do attend the Supplemental Course, they only have to log 40 hours, of which 10 of those hours have to be at night. So, it reduces the number of hours that students have to log.” The Supplemental Parent Course will have many of the questions that will be on the Driver’s Test explained to the students so they can understand them and according to the Minnesota Department of Vehicle Services, students whose parents participated with their children’s learning in the Driver’s Education have been in fewer accidents.
The course will meet on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. (though there will be no classes on April 15th, 16th, and 18th for Spring Break). Upon completing the course, students must hold a written permit for at least six months and be at least 16 years old before they are allowed to take the Driver’s License exam unless they are completing a Farm Permit. If any parents or students have any questions about the course, they can call Highland Principal and Course Instructor Chris Trostad at 218-281-5600 or email him at christrostad@isd593.org.
