THIEF RIVER FALLS OUTSCORES PIRATE SOFTBALL 36-2 IN DOUBLEHEADER MONDAY AFTERNOON

The Thief River Falls Prowlers mashed at the plate and got solid pitching to outscore the Crookston Pirate Softball team 36-2 in a doubleheader on Monday afternoon in Thief River Falls.

GAME ONE –

FIRST INNING –
Crookston sent three to the plate in the top of the first inning for a 1-2-3 top of the first to start the game. The Prowlers would have more success hitting through their order and scoring six runs. Natalie Novak started the scoring with a two run home run for Thief River Falls, and after a single and Pirates error, Kora Sorter would drive in another run with a single. After Crookston picked up the second out of the inning, back-to-back walks loaded the bases and brought another run across the plate making it 4-0. A Pirates error scored two more runs and at the end of the first inning, Thief River Falls was in front 6-0.

SECOND INNING –
Reese Swanson led off the top of the second inning with a single but would be doubled off of first base after Kambelle Freije hit a rocket right at the Prowlers shortstop. Emilee Tate would reach on a Prowlers error with two outs, but a groundout ended the inning and kept Crookston off the scoreboard.

The Prowlers would break the game open for good in the bottom of the second inning. The first six hitters reached base to start the inning making it 9-0 with the bases still loaded and nobody out. Walks and wild pitches throughout the rest of the inning would bring in five more runs and by the time the inning was over, Thief River Falls held a 14-0 lead after two complete innings.

THIRD INNING –
Crookston went quietly in the top of the third inning failing to get a base runner. After the Pirates got the leadoff out in the bottom of the third, The Prowlers hit a double, single, and triple to score two runs. The third runner would come in to score as well later in the inning and Thief River Falls took a 17-0 lead into the fourth inning.

FOURTH INNING –
Crookston got a leadoff walk from Madi Bruggeman to start the third inning, and after a one out single from Reese Swanson, the Pirates had runners on first and second base. Kambelle Freije would then smack a ball to the right field wall scoring Bruggeman for Crookston’s first and only run of the game. The Pirates next two hitters would get out as they stranded two on base, and Thief River Falls would win the game 17-1 in four innings due to the 15-run rule.

GAME TWO –

FIRST INNING –
The Pirates would get a two out single from Madi Abrams in the top of the first inning, but Prowlers starting pitcher Olivia Tougas would pick up two strikeouts and keep Crookston from scoring. Just like in game one, Natalie Novak would hit another two run home run for Thief River Falls to open the scoring and give the Prowlers a 2-0 lead. Crookston starting pitcher Allysen Wagner did a good job of bearing down after that and getting the Pirates out of the inning only trailing 2-0.

SECOND INNING –
Kambelle Freije led off the top of the second with an infield single and advanced to second base on a groundout. That would be as far as she got, as back-to-back strikeouts ended the inning.

The bottom of the second inning was disastrous for the Pirates. The Prowlers first 17 hitters all reached base and they scored 15 runs before Crookston was able to register an out. In total, Thief River Falls scored 16 runs on seven hits, six walks, and four Pirates errors. That gave the Prowlers a huge 18-0 lead after two innings.

THIRD INNING –
Madi Bruggeman would reach base in the top of the third inning with two outs, but again the Crookston offense failed to get her in as they were held scoreless for the third straight inning. Thief River Falls tacked on one more run in the bottom of the inning and would take a 19-0 lead in the top of the fourth.

FOURTH INNING –
Crookston wouldn’t go down without a fight. The Pirates would get back-to-back singles from Reese Swanson and Kambelle Freije to start the inning, and after a Prowlers error, the bases were loaded with nobody out. Thief River Falls would record a strikeout, and after a groundout to the pitcher for the second out, Crookston would get their first and only run of the game on a throwing error allowing Kambelle Freije to come home and score. That would be all in the top of the fourth for Crookston and Thief River Falls would win the game 19-1 in four innings due to the 15-run rule.

Crookston drops to 2-13 on the season and will be at East Grand Forks on Wednesday for a game against the Green Wave. The Prowlers move to 9-4 with the two wins.
