Thomas Amiot, 82 of Crookston, was sentenced to 12 years for committing a first-degree sex crime against a child who was under the age of 13. Amiot pleaded guilty in December and was given the minimum sentence. The sentence comes after Amiot engaged in sexual conduct with a boy in 2012 and 2013.
During a monthslong period in 2012 and 2013, Amiot engaged in sexual conduct with a boy who was 11 or 12 years old, according to court documents.
Amiot’s attorney requested a stayed sentence instead of being put on probation because of his age, lack of criminal history, trauma endured from sexual abuse as a young child, and a suicide attempt in 2024. The attorney also made the case using his charitable donations, including starting and funding the Cove Youth Center in Crookston.
The stayed sentence request was denied, and Amiot will serve prison time in St. Cloud. Amiot, when released after serving his time, will be on supervised release for 10 more years and will have to register as a sex offender. Amiot could be released after eight years.
