Thor “Art” Arlen Gilbertson – OBIT

Thor “Art” Arlen Gilbertson, 77, of Ada, MN, died July 18, 2024 under the care of Benedictine Care Community and Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Art was born on March 19, 1947, in Ada, MN, the son of Allen “Dutch” and Margaret (Johnson) Gilbertson. He graduated from Ada High School in 1965. He then attended Moorhead State University where he graduated with teaching degrees in Math and Physical Education.

Art and Mara (Sanders) were united in marriage on November 6, 1976 at Grace Lutheran Church in Ada, MN. They were blessed with two children, Ryan and Jason. Art worked at the Ada Grain Company until he started farming in 1977. He continued to farm until 1999 when he retired due to health issues.

Art was most well known in town for selling his sweet corn. Generations of people have memories of getting their sweet corn from Art. The corn was always piled high in the back of his pickup truck where he would sit and sell with his sons, and then his grandsons, Brady and Alex. He continued to sell his corn until he went into Benedictine Care Community in 2022.

Art demonstrated his strength and resilience while battling his disease throughout most of his life. Prior to moving into the Care Community, he would go to the Dekko daily to keep up his strength by swimming and working out. His unwavering determined spirit was an inspiration to all. Even in the worst of times he was never one to complain. Art will be remembered for his kind heart and warm smile. A true gentleman and scholar.

Art is survived by his wife, Mara Gilbertson, Ada, MN; sons, Ryan (Jess) Gilbertson, Ada, MN, and Jason (Brianne) Gilbertson, Ada, MN; siblings, David Gilbertson, Fertile, MN, Carol (Jim) Demgen, East Gull Lake, MN, and James Gilbertson, Lubbock, Texas; 5 grandchildren, Brady, Alex, Rhett, Marin and Ramsey Gilbertson; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dutch and Margaret; and niece, Jennifer.

The family of Art Gilbertson would like to extend their appreciation to Hospice of the Red River Valley and the staff at Benedictine Care Community for the special care that they gave to Art.

A private family graveside service will be held at the Ada Municipal Cemetery.
